SUNDAY HERALD CUP CHINA BEAT ENGLAND
4
Spurred on by this reverse, the Chinese attacked continuously and a quick shot by Tam was well sav ed by Combey. Bliss made a great clearance when Fung was almost through.
England then returned to the at- tack, and bombarded the. Chinese goal with several hard shots, but Lim saved well. However, the odds were two great and Langmead scor
a well ed the second goal with placed shot.
From the restart. the Chinese were again on the offensive, and Fung, after a brilliant solo effort; almost scored when his shot, struck the cross-bar. At this stage, the English goalkeeper had a lot to do, but he came out of it splendidly. The ball was then transferred to the Chinese side, and Lim had to dive fall length to stop hard shot by Ridley. Shortly afterwards England went further ahead, when Bryant scored from a nice pass by Langmead.
The Chinese then made a deter- mined effort to pull the game out of the fire, and within a minute had reduced the lead. A quick -passing forward left Mak So un- marked, and he placed the shot well beyond the reach of Combey. Soom afterwards, they further re- duced the deficit, when Fung Kings Cheong scored with a splendid shot just outside the penalty sten.
Half time arrived with England. by three goals to two.
After the interval, England press- ed heavily, and Shirras just missed a goal when he tried a long shot which went a little too high. The Chinese goal หา continuously bombarded, but remained intact! Play then transferred, and from a nice centre by Yang. Siu Yick, Tam Keng Pak equalised with a nice headed.
Encouraged by this muccess, the Chinese attadced, and forced three corners within a minute, but all proved fruitless.
In the other end, Langmead and Ridley both missed nice centres from Hocquard,
From then on, the Chinees had matters much their own, probably cwing to the fact that the English were. somewhat disheartened by this setback, after having a three goal advantage. From a centre by Ip. Strange handled the ball un- necessarily, and the Chinese were awarded a penalty. Fung took the spot kick, but Combey brought off a magnificent save.
A minute later, the Chinese were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, Fung again took the kick, East Combey again saved splendidly, but the hall went out to In Pak Wa who netted easily. Tive minutes later the Chinese went furs. ther ahead when Fung King Cheong scored with a fast ground ehot.
No fewer than eight goals were scored in the match between China and England for the Sunday Herald Cup, which was won by the former by Ave goals to three, the game was played on the Club ground, and was one of the best seen for some time. England was leading by three goals in the first forty minutes, but the Chinese showing great determination gradu ally overcame this deficit and came out worthy winners. For the Chi- gre, Leung Wing Chiu, the centre half, wae the outstanding player, his ball distribution to the for- wards being excellent, while At the conchision of the game, Combey, at goal was the best Me: D.
