In 1858 a move was made to the Nell Gwynne Tavern, Strand, and during the next twen ty-three years Savages found home in no fewer than eight ta verns, until, in 1881, premises were taken in Lancaster House, in the Savoy, which were occupied for nine years. An old minute in the records proves that the neighbour hood in those days was far from safe at night, for it was resolved to appeal to the Commissioner of Police to afford greater protection to members when they left the club!

It was after the expiration of this tenaney that a move was made to the club's present home in Adel- phi-terrace, which is now being threatened with demolition. Truly has it been said that no other club has had such a nomadic past.

"The programme from 5:30 to 7.15 p.m. will, provided reception proves How the name of the club came satisfactory, be replaced by the to be adopted is something of a Daventry programme advertised be- mystery, which has never been low:- solved and never will be, and is 11 to 11.30 am-Stock and exchange

the cause of argument-sometimes heated-to this day.

The Qualification for Membership.

There can be no dispute, how ever, as to the qualification for membership, which, though alter- ed from time to time, remains, in It reads as essentials, the same. follows: "The club is instituted for the association of gentlemen connected professionally with Li-12 terature, Art, Music, or the Drama in their creative or interpretive aspects, and with Science through original research."

This blending of the Arts and Science has much to do with the success of the Club, which, even in these hard times, is unaffected by

the conditions There can be no

particular form of "shop" talked when men drawn from so wide a field are handed together, and con-

versation which is supposed to be

a lost art can be heard at its best at the Savage Club, which is also famous for its "Saturday nights," when mernbera and friends are en- tertained by their brother Savages throughout the winter season..

A Distinguished Neighbour who dined at the Club one evening to talk to members about the history of the Adelphi, said he thought the Savage was unique in that when he looked down upon the terrace and saw members meeting: outside the club premises, they seemed genuinely pleased to see each other

Several books have been written about the Savage Club, many more books have given short pen-pic- tures of it, but none has really been able to capture in cold print the cheery atmosphere which has made the club famous through the world. Here Bohemia, still exists in the heart of London, though bf. a brand somewhat different from that which was prevalent seventy. five years ago.

Should the Bill which was re- cently before the House of Lords be passed it will, doubtless, be the prelude to the development of the estate which will lead to the de- molition of a London backwater of historical interest and beauty. This Adelphi site was bought by the brothers Adam, and they complet ed the erection of the Terrace with the aid of the proceeds of a lot tery, and afterwards lived there. Many Famous people have pacea the Terrace, including Dr. John- mon, when paying a visit to his friend, David Garrick; Emma Hart later the famous Lady.8 Hamilton-earned her living by posing as the "Goddess of Health" for a celebrated quack, Dr." John Graham, in what was sure- ly one of the very first beauty par8.3-0.10 p.m.-Chinese Studio con- lours; Thomas Hardy, at a later dato, practized here as an architect under Sir Reginald Blomfield: To come down to the present day.
