LECTURE AT UNIVERSITY
THE HISTORICAL DEVE LOPMENT OF THE ARCH"
PAPER BY MR. BOXER
1.
Under the auspices of the Hong Kong University Engineering So ciety, a lecture on the above sub ject was delivered last night by Mr. Stanley Boxes, B. Be The lecturer pointed out that in the first place all structural architec ture resolved itself into one of two essentially different types: trabe ated, where beams were used and arculated, where arches or vaults were employed. The earliest form of architecture was trateated. All Greek atructures standing to-day consist of lintels resting on columns, the accumulative effect of which must have been very effective, but which were of course very extrava- gant in material. It was not until the Roman period that the arch first appeared in common use and than it did so not so much as a
simple arch B3 barrel-shaped vault. The Romans lived a differ ent type of life from the Greeks. They required large halls for their assemblies, and the multiplicity of columns of the Greek type of build. (d)-Motor Machine Gun Section:

Consequent ly the ides occurred of having two or three barrel-vaults side by side, and arching the intervening walls It was then discovered that by hav- ing vaulta side by side the burst- ing thrust of the one could be counteracted by the bursting thrust of the other, so that apart from the walls at the extreme sides pt the building, walls could be made lighter. Finally transverse barrel vaults were used, and the columnar

Never Stinted Material, The Romans were never stinted
for money or material, and were able to build on much an extensive scale because they could afford to do so. They resisted the bursting stresses of arches, vaults and domes, by sheer mass of weight in the abutment walls. When the Roman Empire disintegrated, the Christian Church took up the matter of church building; but funds were scarce, and they could not employ the expensive methods of their forerunnera In Eastern Europe, a style known as Byssutine sprang up, where the essential feature was the dome. The Romans had em

Architecture in the West.
In the west however architecture developed along a wholly different line. There must have been much disappointment among the would- be builders as vault after vault fell in. But experience taught them at last, and in teaching them, H.E. the Governor has been
