ATTEMPT TO STOP A SHIP

Anti-War League Action

POLICE COURT SEQUEL

(Special Air Mail Service)

Blyth, March 14-An attempt by members of the Blyth Anti-War League to prevent the sailing of the steamer Stanleyville to Japan last week-end resulted in John Davison, of North Shields, docker, being charged today with attempting to persuade senmen im the steamer, to refuse to procred to

Mr. J... Yarwood, prosecuting said Davison was caught in the Blyth Shipbreaking Yard at 1.30 on Sunday when a special guard was on duty because of an anticipated attempt to incite the Stanleyville crew to mutiny.

Arrested Davison said, When "My party does not believe in war, and that ship is being taken ta Japan with war material. I want d to get on board the vessel to have a geting with the crew to prevent their sailing with the ship."

The suggestion that WAT material was being taken to Japan was absolutely unfounded," said Mr. Yarwood. "The contrast to sell the Stanleyville was made be fore hostilities began, and the Japanese purchasers could not do

break. anything but steamer."

Col. Fred Harrison, resident director nf Messrs. Hughes Balekow, said the Stanleyville sail- ed with six British officers and eighteen foreign seamen. All were promised repatriation on arrival in Japan, but some did not like the conditions and left the ship the day before she sailed. Serap metal was loaded on the Stanleyville for ballast.

Last year, said Col. Harrison, thirty-six British-owned ships were sold to Japan,

Davison : "Is it not a fact that the Stanleyville will be broken up and 4,000 to 5,000 tons of metal melted down and made into shells?

Col. Harrison: I am very doubtful about it."

Davison was fined £8.

London, March 14.-The Navy Estimates for the coming financial year, total £53,570,000-an incrense of £3,093,700 over the estimate of

year ago.

London, March 1t.-Statements that people who have reached "the other side" possess bodies, and that some of them do not even know that they are dead," were made by Sir Oliver Lodge in a broadcast talk on "The Future Life" in the National programme. Sir Oliver also suggested that those who are dead can be helped by those who still live.

"Some of the dead," he said, "do not always know that they have died. They tell us that things are not much changed, that existence does not seem revolu- tionarily different, and that they still have bodies, though they are anable to make use of their earth- ly matter.

Bodles of Ether. "In amplication of the state- ment that they still have bodies make the hypothesis that they are in an etheric environment in stead of a material one, and that their bodies are made of ether, Our future bodies are just as real to our etheris senses no are the bodies we have grown accustomed to, but those, we certainly leave hehind and never attend to aquin.' We go on with our ether bodies the complete material organism.

"This may not be a corect in- terpretation of what they have told me about the conditions of their existence.

It is my intor. Pretation of their testimony, and as such there may be plenty of error in it, along with some kind of truth."

The cruisers form the last instal- ment of the replacement programme due for completion by December 31, 1936, under the terms of the London Naval Treaty.

Sir Bolton Eyres-Monsell, First Lord of the Admiralty, states in a memorandum that the estimates like those of 1932, "have been re- stricted by the exigencies of the financial situation, and do not ful ly provide for all the potential needs of the Navy.

"A large part of the normal ex- upon shipbuilding in penditure 1932 was deliberately ratarded and heaped into subsequent years by the temporary expedient of defer- ring the orders for the 1931 pro- gramme. The remainder (£738,340) of the increase over 1932 does little more than make good an automa- tic rise in 1033 in the total of the an increase of £64,000 in the cost non-effective votes (£295,367 gross), of maintenance of the Fleet Air Arm (no new flights are provided) and a further shrinkage in re- ceipts (£346,666) due to depressed trade conditions generally.

"It follows that the sum provid- ed in 1933 for effective naval ser- vices other than the new construc tion programme is not materially larger than in 1932."

The number of officers, seamen, boys and Royal Marines provid ed for under the new estimates is 90,300, a decrease of 1,110.
