The late collector's activities covered a wide field, and the collec tion removed from his bouse in Kensington Palace Gardens is re- markable for both its variety and 7 to 7.19 p.m. --- the general high quality of the objects. The English furniture is perhaps the outstanding feature,.

any of the pieces being acquired long before collectors had begun to devote their attention to the produc- tions of our great eighteenth- |ventury craftenen.-

Collection of Chippendale. Many were bought, at the memor alde Dean Paul sale in 1006, and on these au particular there should be a remarkable advance on the nices then paid. Mr. Hirsch had

great prodilection for the work.18 of Chippendale, and so small was the competition that his agent was able to acquire over 40 pieces by this maker for an expenditure of little over £700.

A specimen of outstanding merit in this section is a magnificent Chip- rondale cabinet boldly carved with swaga of flowers and drapery, and with a top border carved with rosette and riband ornament on a matted groundi. There is a wide range of hippendale chairs, several fine tables and mirrors, and a notable pair of elaborately-carved · torcheres. There is also an import- ant set of 12 William III. chairs in the manner of Daniel Marot, while another notable lot consists of a pair of Sheraton commodes design-

ed in the French taste. Both these lots are illustrated in "The Dic- tionary of English Furniture."

Nearly all the best-known minia turists are represented, an especial ly notable lot being a pair of miniatures of Henry VII. and 5 Elizabeth of York of the school of Hans Holbein,

Chinese Porcelain. The Chinese porcelain, of the K'ang Hsi, Yung Chêng, and Ch'ien Lang periods, contains the figureé of Kwan Yin, of Pu-tai Ho-shang, a group of a sage with two atten- dants, and choice specimens of

famille rose

and "' famille verte" worthy of a place in the inst brilliant assembly.

The Sèvres porcelain includes an exceptionally no pair of boat shaped vases with gilding by Vin- cent. Among the French decorative objects is a channing pair of white marble figures by. Clodion, while there aro in addition important Italian bronzes, Limoges enamels, und Renaissance works of art from some of the most world-famous collections dispersed at Christie's during the past 40 years.
