IN CHINA

According to recent investigation. there are in Chekinng 123 powor plants, with a total capacity of 32,170 kilowatts and representing $12,000,000 in capital investmont. They are located in 58 districts and ono municipality, and according to capacity are classified in four groups as follows:--

In 1031 the average monthly supply of current was about 50,000 kilowatt hours, supplying 1,780 buildings with light, Receipts for the year amounted to $98,000, while the total expenditure was $03,000.

The above six plauts are the most important in the province, and are fairly representative of the rest. Most of the power-plants in Che kiang have recently made extensions and increased their capacity, in many cases the reserve being equal to or even greater than the demand Of the remaining 16 plants, de-load. Chekiang produces annually" 38,000,000 picula of rice, but imports 15,000,000 piculs from other parts of China and abroad. As the most

frequent causes of this difficiency are droughts and floods, the pro- vince could be made, more sell-sup. porting in this respect, if power were used for irrigation purposes instead of the present primitive methods. Again, the western part of the province, including such populous commercial cities as Ning- Po, Shaching, Kashing, Huchow, etc., is in great need of specily nieans of transportation, and if there were power availbale, electric railway and tramcur services could be established with the prospect of handsome profits.

NEW MOTOR TUGS

HIGH-POWERED VESSELS

ON THE THAMES

In view of the fact that an order has been placed for a high-powered Thames lighterage tug to be equip ped with Diesel olectric machinery, it is perhaps of interest to sum- marize the progress already made with this important type of motor vessels. About 13 years have clap sed since the first motor tug was placed in service. This vessel, the Grove Place, is fitted with a 175 Ib.h.p. Bolinder semi Diesel engine, and it is interesting to note that her owners, Messrs, Humphrey and. Grey, have added only motor tugs to their fleet in the meantime.
