WELSH SOCIETY'S DELIGHTFUL DINNER
TRIBUTE TO THE LAND OF LOVELY HILLS"
AND GENIAL PEOPLE
Witty speeches, good fellowship and very beautiful singing are memories of the St. David's Society Dinner that will long remain with the guests at the dinner given last night in Lane, Orawford'a Restaurant, in honour of St. David's Day. The South Wales Bor- derers' choir sang, as real music lovers sing, from their hearts, and not from heads that are never raised from the music' sheet, and the haunting melodias of Wales conquered the hearts oven of the most hardened Bassenacha.
The Hon. Mr. Southorn, a real lover of Wales, astonished both members and guests by his mastery of the strange de vowel- led names, and his story of a truly Welsh epitaph, of the good old days, was the hit of the svening.
About 120 guests were present, the President of the Society, Mr. E. R. Davies, being in the chair,

SWATOW, February 24. It seems we are drifting back to the situation at the end of 1931 when the position here was critical and hostilities likely to break out it any moment. On account of the fighting in Jehol, the humour has just hoon circulated that trenches ure being dug again by the military. authorities around the disused fort. I hear furthermore that other pre- cautionary aneasures are being con- templated and will be put into effect As soon as possible.
The Chinese public are quite optimistic on the whole, the con- Gidenco arising out of the stern re- sistance put up by the 19th Army in Shanghai.

There is still no talk of the evacuation of Japanese women and children for the time being, unless the unforeseen happens.'
