RADIO POSSIBILITIES IN MALAYA

MUNICIPAL BUILDING AS STATION

A vision of the extent to which broadcasting could be utilised in Malaya in the future with a pos- sibility of the flat roof of the Municipal Building being used as a central transmitting station--was given in the address of Flight Lieut. B. II. L. Allen, the Royal Air Force wireless specialist at Seletar to the members of the Rotary Club at the weekly luncheon meeting on Jan. 11.

Flight Lieut. Allen said:

I may say at the very start that there is no major difficulty what aver in the way of broadcasting in this country. We have during the last three years at Seletar been re- ceiving from aircraft on medium and long waves and also on me derately short waves in comparison f with the very long, and also on the shortest waves of all, and we have found that there is no tonjor difficulty, whatever.

The first thing that strikes one when speaking of broadcasting here is, atmospherics. Atmospherics are noise caused by electrical discharges

which in the atmosphere, grunts and other horrible noises in the receiver.

Cause

Covering Malaya.

If you put in short, wave you will only reach a very sinall public. If you instul apparatus which will transmit on 200 to 300 metres you will be able to receive on practically anything-any old bit of crystal or anything, and any person without any knowledge at all except, one copy of World Radio would be able to make a set and get good reception, and you could make up a set extremely cheaply. You would however get slightly more atmos pherics.

My experience hers and in other countries is that if you use power atmospheric you will get over trouble. I suggest therefore that for broadcasting in Singapore for Singapore, the island, and Johore, and in good conditions for 150 miles They have a bad reputation here, "P country, a traommitter in the centre of Singapore, of two OF but I rather feel that that reputa three kilowatts, and working on a tion is exaggerated, and the reason

VEJA.

The result is that the incoming broadcast signal has been very weak and has been right down to the noise level of atmospherica, and in consequence they have actually amplified not only the signal but the atmospherics as well, with result that you all know.

The other possibility is to use one Kuala Lumpur and Penang. There of the trunk lines between here and is only one snag in that, and that is that the epeech filter will not pas music, but addresses could be passed over this as a stand-by circuit.

There is one other reason why you should use the long ware in Singapore itself, and that is be- transmitter cause of the fans. Only this morn. 1 working on 20 to 30 metres. The two fan going wrong in the guard transmitters working together would o give a perfectly good service and you would appeal to the thousands

and not the few as far as the con. struction of receivers, is concerned. If you are putting in a broadcast service you want to get as many people as you can.

As regards the rest of the pro- gramme I am not quite so sure, You at least have a programme at tiffin time on Wednesdays which no doubt could be broadcast, and there are plenty of shows, dance bands, and other local amusements, which could be put over, and I bave no doubt a great many people could be found to speak.

and the guard TOOK

is three hundred yards away. It would therefore be impossible to uss short wave generally in Smge pare where direct current is used. You co no get the same interfer- ence with alternating current, and It would be all right in those dis- triste where that is used; but where you have direct current you do get the interference. I therefore think it would be absolutely essential to use the medium wave length.

One last word, and that is most

important. Broadcasting is not a matter to be taken up without due consideration. It is a two-edged Used properly it can be a sword.

You voly great source of good. can use it for entertainment, educa- tion, religious work, and for many other purposes, all bringing good to man, but used wrongly it can be a very great power for evil.

These facts were told to a repre sentative of the Morning Post recently following a paper read bo före the Royal Society by Dr. R. L. Smith-Roec, of the National Phy sical Laboratory. Teddington, who described his investigations of the electrical properties of the soil.

Dr. Smith-Rose has examined the soil from different parts of the country and has found that the conducting power of dry soil is in- creased more than one thousand times by the addition of sufficient water. to bring its moisture content. up to the value commonly met with in garden soil.

HAVE YOU HEARD THESE?

Here are lists of long-wave and short-wave stations which should be plaked up by anyone in Hong Kong who has a mode- rately good sot suitable for re- seiving such signals, Buccess in picking up these stations also depends very largely upon fav« ourable atmosphérie conditions, Readers are invited to add to this list should they succeed in. picking up any, station not in-

·cluded in either of these lista,

This would require a great deal rf co-operation by the telephon's company and I-auggest that the company would be well advised to consider the possibility of doing what the G.PO. has done at home that is, inetal system in con- junction with the Empire and local broadcasting by which subscribers to the telephone can plug in a loud speaker on their telephone circuit: and get a complete broadcast, In London now you can ring up and be plugged in to any of the local London or Daventry broadcasts or 67.05 to practically any theatre. I sug-267 gest that that system could pro-so bably be put in and would pay 18. very well
