KANSU EARTH- QUAKE KILLS 70,000|

SCORES OF TOWNS

DESTROYED

Peping, Feb. 13.-Foreigners reaching Peping by cazul from Kansa privince, several hundred miles into the interior, reported

to-day that 70,000 persons were estimated to have been killed there by an earthquake occurring December 20.

Literally scares of towns and vil lages in the mountainous districts were destroyed, while the popula-: tion was left destitute.

The headquarters of the China Faine Relief received official but incomplete advices describing the earthquake, but in much smaller proportious.

There figures reported 230 known killed, approximately 200 fatally injured and other seriously injur ed. The Famine Relief office ad- mitted these reports were not final.

Travellers said that towns and villages in a district of a radius of 100 miles around Kactai were istroyed, wrecking everything over

wide plateau.

Waa

+

The official reports concerned immediate Kaotai and only vicinity.

There

no doubt but that there was a severe earthquake, the only question being whether the Ins reached such appalling propor. tions as indicated in the latest re- ports,

If the latest reports are verified the quake will rank as one of the major disturbances on record.
