WHO WILL WIN THE DERBY? THE LIKELY STARTERS NOW ARE BRECHIN (CLARK), CHARMING STAR (LI), COSSACK'S BEAUTY (HEARD}, '000 000 BAY (HILL), JAUK (FROST), AND TRENTÁRIDGE ‘(NEEDA),

2,

THE PICK OF THIS YEAR'S GRIFFINS ARE REPRESENTED IN THE ABOVE LOT AND ALTHOUGH TRENTBRIDGE WON COMFORTABLY ENOUGH" ON SATUR- DAY I AM NOT YET CONVINCED THAT HE IS AN OUT-AND-OUT WINNER OF THE DERBY..

His race in The Trial Plate did not reveal very much. He was too good for the rest of the field; but what a poor field he was up against). He had a victory of many lengths with a 2.39 mile and a quarter! That là not a startling performance and though Treatbridge is capable of much better time than he hitherto shown, both in training and in Baturday's race, I still think he is not at all a certainty for the Darby, but his chances are the best in a field of several evenly- matched ponies.

What of Coo Coo Bay after her defeat in the Maidens? Many no doubt will consider that this pony is finished as far as her chances of winning the. Darby is contained. « That is decided ly a wrong view to take and doo Doo Bay is still as strong a candidate for the Derby as she ever was and no doubt she will be disputing the finish this afternoon.

Jack Still A Mystery"

Pony

We did not see anything of the mystery pony Jack. The latest rumour is thao Frost will ride it. Whatever the pony is capable of doing, personally I feel it much safer to bot on something we have

For those looking for long odds, Brechin is not a bed proposition at all. The pony is even now improv ing with every gallop and the bit of hard work in the Hopeful Stakes on Saturday may have done him a world of good. He looks the best outsider for the Derby, and, with Clark in great riding form, any thing can happea.

What about Cossack's Beauty? The pony won the Maidens by many lengths, and, aided by the experi enced jockeyship of Hoard, might pop a surprise. He certainly has plenty of speed and if he has little stamina there will be a good race between Cossack's Beauty and tho favourites, mark by words. Unless the pony oracks up a ratti- ing pace in the first mile, he will do very well indeed.

On the whole the Derby is by no means an easy thing for "Trent- bridge, though, as I have said, when one weighs up the chances Trent- bridge appears to have the best claim

Other Selections.

Clark ought to win the first race on the programme with The Goat or Swale, whichever is sent to the post. Hey Tor might go out here und in that case should take place. I have not entirely forgot ten Black Velvet and should the pony start, a place seems likely.

In the second race even a ten- pound penalty does not seem likely to stop Night Star from winning, unless Portia proves to be as good us the public have made it seem to be in Saturday's betting. Ration will probably start for the first timer in this race. Look out for hin ́t City of Brisbane and Ngtuk must not be entirely neglected, but on the whole it looks like a tussle be- tween Portia and Night Star.

of all proportion to the risks and it is to be feared that when Racing Boy starts for this event, the ro turn will be $6.10 or thereabouts. Racing Boy aliould win but anyone who is prepared, to accept ten cents return on a 85 investment on this pony deserves to lose. Bistre anil Helter Skelter seem to be the next best things after Racing Boy and are sure to put up a good race.

The Mongolian Stakes. Over deven furlongs this race for subs might provide a win for, Jack O'Lantern in case both The Gost and Swale are kept out of this The Tyro Stakes, over five fur- event. Victoria Stakes,

The Melbourne Cup looks like a race between Woodland Stag and In spite of the defoet of Diana Polar Star and there ought to he Bay on Saturday, if this pony is a rattling good race too. The two sont out in the Victoria Stakes, she best Australians will have the ser will quality for the Champions vices of Messrs. Frost and Lara- without the slightest trouble. This spectively and it is difficult to pick race ought to go to the Dunbar between them Polar Star's last -Stable as there are Liborty Bay public appearance was very con and Gleneagles to fall back upon, vincing while. Woodland Stag was should it be decided not to send benten over a short sprint the last Diana Bay out. Meridian Star. Champagne Bay, The Tiger and Valorous are the best things for this event.

Challenge Oup.

Hera again, is à race for The **Dunbar atable and whichever candidate is sent out should win. Diana Bay or Liberty Bay may go out here had if they are they should win. King's Justice and Gay Crusader will probably go out again, but unless Sitting Bull is selected to carry the stable colours,. there is no chance of any sonta- tional upset.

Black Rock Stakes.

It is difficult to see what griffins will be left in the "Black Rock " Stakes over a mile and a quarter. If Street Singer goes out he should win in view of the fact that the best grifing will be going out in Derby Spotted Butterfy ought to repeat his performance of Saturday and get into a place. Possibly Tenorio: will run here.
