SMALL-POX

AN UNNECESSARY SCOURGE

"Home-Side Vacination Not A Sure Protection

Dr. G. W. Pope, Medical Officer, of Health, was good enough to`give an interview to a Daily Press repre sentative yesterday on the subject of the small-pox epidemic.

Dr. Pope is of the opinion that small- pox could be practically stamped out in this Colony by proper co- operation between the Government, the European residenta and the better educated. Chinese.

Proportionately very faw CANCE are imported.

hold the contagion and even com- municate it to adjacent bundles of clothes. When the winter garments are taken out of store small-pox rears its ugly head once more in the Colony. With the putting away of the unwashable winter garments it gradually disappears, fewer and fuwer fresh cases being reported.

This being so the problem is prevention. It is a law of Hong Kong that avery child should i vaccinated, but a law which is at present very difficult of enforcr- ment Proportionately few Chinese births are registered. The welfare etations and maternity hospitali do. excellent work in insisting where. possible on vacelnition but that touches only a frings of the prob lein. The Government and grant aided schools are practically free of small pox, only one case and two contacts being reported during the present epidermic. The St. John- Ambulance Brigade do splendid. work, and at one station in Kow- loon anything from 30 to 900 people are vaccinated every evening, Vaccination at Home is Insfective i Two very significant points are that the Chinese do not object to vaccipation, and that a vaccination in England is not sufficient protec tion for European.

Liu Hsiang, whose headquarters! were in Chunking, has had the ad. vantage of aeroplanes for attack and scouting. He used these with deadly effect at Luchow, where great damage was done from the air. That place, on the north bank of the Yangtse, above Chungking suffered heavily in the fighting, Chengt was visited by the aero- planes twice and a few bombs drop. ped. These did very little damage. More havoc was wrought by the Iutile methods of defence used by the 24th army, who madly fired of trench mortars at the aeroplanes which were about three thousand feet up. These did not of course rench within any distance of their farget, but dropped in the out. skirts of the city, démolishing many Houses, and causing many deaths among the civilian population.,.

Heavy fighting took place in the streets of Chengte. Barricades had been erected and even trenches dug in the main streets shops and houses had been occupied by the soldiers and business had been at a standstill for several weeks. On November 18 the fighting in the eity began in earnest between the 24th and 29th armies. The 29th held the northern section of the city and the 24th the South and When the soldiers who had oc- Western sections, while somewhere cupied Bishop Mowil's house took between the North and East parts their departure they took also all, of the city the 28th army was scat they fancied of the contents of the tered about but taking no part in house. It appears that since small-pox has become a rare disease in Eng land, owing to the prevalence of vaccination, it has lost a great deal of its virulence. The lymph used in England is, in consequence.. much weaker than that used in places where there is a real danger of contracting small-por Every European coming to this Colony should, therefore, be revaccinated with H.K.
