GOLDFIELDS -

(Special Air-Mail Service)

LONDON, JA. 20. The important. Colonial Oftico: statement on the Kenya and ques tion was issued to-day after Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister had had an. interview with the Prime Minister. It is the official reply to the strong eriticisms that have been made or tho amending Native Ordinance in Kenya, which allowed the distur banco ot, native rights in the Kavirondo reserve, where land is required for gold mining, without zdequate provision for compensa tion in the form of land elsewhere. The demand for adequate com- pensation in land will be certainly amphasised when the matter is rais- od by a debate in the House of Commons shortly after the new session begins, and it will forin' the subject of a motion which will bo. put down for discussion in the House of Lords on February, 15,

Great disappointment was ex- pressed to-day, however, at the omission from the statement of a point to which many people here httach great importance. They are anxious that a portion of the Government Jovy on the profits of the goldfields in the reserves should be earmarked for native welfare. There is, it is urged, pressing need for such provision. The nativos require assistance in carrying on their agriculture, which will be increased, as the result of the disturbance resulting from

gold mining, and it is expected that the new conditions of labour in the reserves, the influx of additional expenditure on health services. It is hoped that the Colonial Secre- tary's silence on this matter does not mean that this aspect has been overlooked. At all events it will not be forgotter in the coming dis- cussions in Parliament.

"Six Honra To Live," directed by William Dieterle, marks the screen debut of Miriam Jordan, a beautiful young English girl re- cently recruited from the Broad- way stage.
