Field Marshal French, when he was ennobled, went & step farther, for he adopted a foreign city for his title when he took the style of Earl of Ypres, for which he was general- ly criticised.

The two septugenarians, G.B.8. and Sir Robert, appeared to find much in common. They discussed the problems of China and Japan, the League of Nations, the con stitutions of foreign governments and, since Shaw was one of the two, it is hardly necessary to add, Communism. It has not been made public if any great conclusions were arrived at, but we learn that Sir Robert and his guest exchanged their views on life generally in a candid, and friendly manner.

After tiffin photographs and mov. ing pictures were taken of the party who then drove to Repulse Bay Hotel, returning to Bir Robert's Peak residence for tea. At 5.30 the party drove down to Queen's Pier where Mr. and Mrs Shaw bade their host and hostess farewell, and took a launch for the Empress of Britain.

Bernard Shaw broke what he describes as his one "principle" in giving his autograph during tiffin, he also signed the visitors book at "Idlewild."

A German Naval Visit?

There is, some prospect that a German naval squadron will pay Great Britain a friendly visit this summer, possibly to Spithead dur definite has been arranged so far, ing Cowes Week. While nothing the project has been mooted in authoritative circles,

Two German cruisers were to have come over last year,, but for some reason, probably considera- tions of economy, the plan was can- celled. The proposed visit will enable our seamen to reciprocate tha cordial reception given to Vice-Admiral Astley Rushton and the Second Cruiser Squadron at Kiel in the summer of 1831.
