THE INDIAN RECREATION CLUB, CHAMPIONS OF THE FIRST DIVISION OF THE CRICKET, LEAGUE WERE DEFEATED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THREE SEASONS AT POKFULAM, WHEN THEY VISITED THE UNIVER SITY ON SATURDAY.

Batting first the University compiled a modest 80 runs, Gosano (24) and Samy (18) being the only batsmen to reach double figures, The Indians, however, crumpled under the excellent bowling of D. J. N. Anderson and Tinker Lee, the former taking collecting five wickets for 18 and the lattar 5 for 29. The visitors were 10 russ abort of the Varalty total when the last wicket fell,

The Indians junior team won handsomely at home against the - "Varalty's second team. The Hong Kong 0.d. visiting the Kowloon 0.0. came away with a victory by 4 wickets. The feat of the day was, however, A. U. Becks 7 for 27, against Kowloon, followed by a 53 not out when no one else, except W. C. Hung, had ap 'proached anywhere near the twenty mark.

Those who went to the Annual Meeting of the Fanling Hunt and Race Olub yesterday were treated to a delightful programme of seven races, three of which were cross-country events and pro- vided much thrill.

The ladies race over three and a half miles of 'rough country was of course the best race of the day. Miss Fearon en Doanabells, was made a red-hot favourite, but unfortunately the pony got its foot into a hole in the country and stumbled, throwing Miss Fearon heavily, but happily without any serious injury. The event went to Country Club ridden by Miss Master with Misa Knill second on Dunce. Allegation of Municipal Council Over-Riding Foreign Consular 'Authority

A start was made in H.M. Superme Court on February 8, with the long-postponed action arising out of the closure of Luna Park by the Shanghai Municipal Council to dog-racing and the sub- soquen cessation of all such operations with the Settlement.

The inventor of part of the machinery, drawing a porcentage on 'pari-mutuel takings, received over $100,000 a year. Counsel also extracted information that 99 9/10 per cent. of the company's income came from the pari-mutuel, he suggesting that an avorage of eighty people each evening paid for admission.

For the plaintiffs it was argued that the Council bad given 'fall approval to the project and, in any case, had no right to take action themselves for a closure without Court authority.

Several surprizes were-registered in the Senior and Junior Shiski competitions which started on Saturday. The Borderers" who de- fested the Ohib by five goals to nil in their League encounter in the previous week were surprisingly held to a draw by the sap takm in the Senior Shield, while the Police who had bestan ti Navy twice in the League Championship went down to the sailors by 7 goals to I.

In the Junior Shield, the holders, the Artillery, were defeated by the Borderers by two goals to one, while the Chinese Athletic recorded a double" triumph by narrow margins.

A rather unpleasant incident occurred in the Third Division match between the Signals and South China, and; ten minutes be "fore time, the referee, Mr. J. Gomes, stopped the game owing to the players getting out of order. The Chinese ware leading by three goals to one at the time.

In the second half, the Club con centrated on defence with the re- sult that the ball was mostly in their half Shortly before the end, 8. Strange, the Club left back was alleged to have handled the ball by a lincaman, and after hot argument, a penalty was awarded which Mallane convertel.

Extra time was played but the match remained undecided.
