standard of those leaving the It meant the sacrifice of good pay of Censors for theatres (which ship you will notice that we have!
But in spite of this series of disasters, which would surely have atterly crippled any but an institu. tion of inherent vitality and use- fulness, the school has steadily in creased in size and has continued to obtain good results in examina tions, in games and in the high school. It is true that in 1931, the examination results were very poor, which no doubt largely caused the slight drop in average. attendancy för 1932, but now in November, 1832, the results were again good, especially in the Junior Local whore our percentage of passes was second only to that of Queen's College among the chief boys' schools.
Full of Hope.
and future security and worse still of many friendships and pleasures which I valued tremendously and made my life exceptionally happy.
I came because I felt convinced that God could best use my services ous here, and that youth in the time for risks and sacrifices.
I want to tell you that I can sincerely say, that in spite of a job which is not easy, had bring many worries and responsibilities, I have never been so happy as dur.
Already the indications all point to a satisfactory increase in suming the last seven months. berg in 1933, and the atmosphere is full of hope.
Even the financial situation has at least one satisfactory aspect, as a good working profit was mule in 1932, in spite of the slightly lower Jumbers and heavier passage and furlough payments than usual. This, of course, does not allow for the interest on the loan, which greatly exceeded the profit. –
What I want strongly to em phasise is this-that the only dif- ficulty is a financial one created by the debt to the Government. If we were showing an annual loss, or decreasing and poor attendance, or bad results of any kind, we should not be justified in asking for sup
port.
When I came out, it was with. as open & mind a possible. I was prepared to find that the site and buildings were too ambitious, more than we were çapable of maintain- ing, and that times and conditions would make it impossible to con tinue the school satisfactorily.
Convinced of Excellence, But now, after seven months here during which I have tried to examine the situation from every point of view, and to identify my self as completely as possible with the life of the school, I feel utterly convinced of the excellence of our -cause and our ability to continuo, and to make the nime and work of the school rise higher and higher.
It would be nothing short of tragedy, cruel tragedy, to close the school or move it or reduce it now when so much has been laboriously accomplished.
When we moved, many people thought we were going out into the wilde-they didn't know which side of the hills we were-and it is bitter to think that we might lose the fruits of the Committee's fore sight in anticipating the amazing development in our neighbourhood, which is even now going ahend at an almost incredible rate.
My heart and soul is in the work of the Diocesan Boys' School, and you can count on my complete devo- tion to it.
CANTON, February 0. That Mr. George Bernard Shaw is the best known English living Buthor to Chinese people seems to have been fully established by the great interest ovinced by his pra Bent visit to the East Invitations to, lecture are said to have been issued to Mr. Bhaw from most of the large cities in the country, in cluding Canton of course. As far as is known, four invitations have been sent from this city, namely from the Sun Yat Sen University, the local Rotary Club, the Board operates under the City Social Welfare Bureau) and the Eastern Literary Society (a group of young men interested in literature and art). Some of Shaw's plays and itings have Chinese translations, but it is not known whether any of the former have been staged in this country. The plays of the late Mr. Galsworthy, who is equally well-known in China, have on the other hand been known to have been staged, especially by student amateurs, the latest occasion being in Canton city, not very long ago.

It is therefore with pride in our past achievenients and a profound conviction in the possibilities for the future that I feel justified in asking you to rally round the school and to give it your support and help during the present dark period.
You may feel sure that we at school will spare no effort to make you feel glad and proud that you have helped to see us through.
APPEAL FOR SUPPORT
To Commemorate Shanghai War
Heroes,
While it is generally known that most of the members of the famous 10th Houto Army are from the southern part of Kwangtung Pro- vince, the Wo Ping district, which is in the north castern part of the province, claims to be the native place of the greatest number of heroes who fell in the fighting in Shanghai against the Japanese early last year. The regiment which hore the brunt of the fighting was composed mainly of men from this district. The present magistrate has now taken steps for the creo- tion of a memorial to these men, mad work is expected to be com menced immediately, donations for the purpose have been received from the leaders of the 19th Route
At the close of Mr. Sargent's speech, His Lordship the Bishop made a strong appeal to the Old Boys to support the Diocesan Boys' School. He said he was glad there was such a good response to the in- vitation as he proposed to ask their support to a scheme to help the old school in which everybody could take a share. He asked each of the old boys present to try and make a regular monthly donation to the school for a period of five years so that the interest on the money owing to the Government could be met. At the end of five years, the Army. Bishop thought, the question of secting the interest would be very much easier.
Dr. Kotowall, in the course of a vary witty speech, explained that the debt due to the Government was $200,000. The interest on half that sun would be met and the old boys were being asked to try and help with the interest on the other Lalf.
