SUCCESSFIAL BABY CARE

THE FIRST TROUSSEAU

SEVERAL requests bave come for

particulars of baby's trousseau. In many instances economy must be studied, so let us consider outfit that, being designed on mo dern lines, will be teonomical and practical as well as attractively dainty.

"

A long-sleeved woollen vest, mea suring nine inches in length and slipping over the head, drawing up at the neck, is excellent, as it is capable of fitting the large or small baby equally casily for sev eral months and does not get out of shape. The exercise. involved in pulling the vest over the head is benefit to baby at dressing time.

The vest should be pinned to the square in front to avoid any gap, and is a more satisfactory way of keeping the little body warm than a belt or binder, which rides up under the arms and becomes a "chest restricter," impeding brea thing and development and often causing colic and serious discom fort.

A binder will be needed for the first week of life, and this should be in the form of a crepe band age, which owing to its elasticity, gives firmness without restriction and does not get out of place.

Next "come the little woollen bootees, which should be long enough to reach to the knees and have rounded toes.

A princess petticoat and a dress. 24ins, long, designed on magyar lines, complete the set, with a ma- tinée coat of material or wool, for cold days, and a bib with long tapes to the loosely round baby's waist. This gives the finishing touch and helps the frock to set in soft folds.

No flannel petticoat is worn at night, but the nightdress can be made on the same lines as the frock in a rather thicker material. The sleeves of frock and nightdress are held loosely at the wrists by a tape run through a casing, mak- ing them adaptable and cosy with- out any restricting bands.

Hend flannela aro no longer used, but two small house shawls will be needed for the first weeks and a large shawl for out of doors. These should be of close mesh, and it is # good thing to wash any very Aluffy woollens before using them.

You will, of course, like to vary the clothes with dainty tucks and stitching if you are making them yourself, and there is ample oppor tunity for this.

*

Mothers who prefer a material troussaat yet are unable to make the clothes themselve can have then made on these lines for a small fee.

Boths are obtainable to suit all pockets, varying from the enamel ones on a stand to the papier maché tub, and two washing dan. nels with a good soap, soft towels,

and flannel and macintosh apron for mother or nurse complete the requirements, together with three to four dozen squares for baby, and

the cot and pram.

Mothers can be sure that by providing a trousseau on these by providing a trousseau on these lines baby will have ample freedom Those who perfer knitting to sew of movement and equally distribut- ing may like to prepare a woollen ed warmth. Moreover, the mate outfit from the first for day wear.rial trousseau lasts from birth till There Are excellent inexpensive nine or ten months, so is an econo books with directions for these. my in time and money.
