Enamel ware is very plentiful in Hong Kong and it is not without interest to learn that Kowloon is soon to have a factory which turn aut wares of this kind at the rate of nearly $3,000 worth a day, '.

The factory, in Cheung Sha Wan, was visited by our representative and proved to be one of the most interesting of the many in Kowloon. Work was commenced over a year ngo and while the factory is still under construction when fully com- pleted it will be the only one of its

production of enamel products and by the time the building was fit for occupation the machinery was in xtalled. It is noteworthy that the muchine shops in Kowloon, the com- pany's engineers doing their own forging and casting.

The metal from which the enamel wares is made is purchased from the United States and Europe. It arrives in the form of thin steel sheets of various guages according to the requirements. These are cut into bircles of required dimensiona and pressed into form by a hugo pressing machine-designed and con- stricted in Hong Kong by the firm'a. engineers. The steel sheets, balore being pressed into shape by this press, which has an estimated pres sure of 50 tons, are first given a coat of oil which prevents the metal from splitting. Wash basins were made when the writer had the op portunity of watching the press at work. The pressing machine has inter-changeable "dies which con- sist of a pair of metal blocks or Plates so shaped as to give the de sired form to the object.

Wrinkles Disappear!

On being pressed into the requir ed form the metal becomes crinkled- where at the curve. This is recti- · fied by placing the object in a machine, not unlike a lathe-which j proceeds to smooth out, the rough surface at the same time giving it abright polish, Mas

The metal form is then thoroughly cleaned and ready for its chemical treatment-the enamelling

The chemical process is the most difficult, and satisfactory results depend on proper care at all stages of the process.

On arrival at the factory in its quarried form it is crushed in a big. granite mill. This takes the simple form of two granite wheels revolv ing in a circular orbit and driven by nu electric motor. This crushes the material into a pasty form, and it is then ready for compounding into a powder. Then follows the very delicate process of fusing at high temperature-exceeding 9,000. degrees Farenheit. It is then allowed to cool and mixed with a special chemicalised clay and water into a slur, and applied to the shaped object. The product is finally placed in a large mufled furnace until thoroughly fused,
