Walled Cities,
Most Chinese cities of any size or importance are enclosed by wall of mud or stone which afford some protection against bandits. Several walled cities, some moited, may be seen in Kowloon and the New Ter- ritories, bitt they are small by comparison with those in China Proper. The best known are Kow loon Old City, Nga Tsin Wai, Kan Tin, Tung Chung (on the island of Lan Tao), and San Tauen, the new Village in Sha Tin Valley which was built by the Hongkong Govern ment to house villagers whose land had been resumed in connection with the Shing Mun Water scheme. At Kowloon City may still be seen the remains of the old official residences and Yamen (Chinese Government offices), together with several old cannon dating back one hundred years or more. It may be mentioned in passing that other.all quins, the remains of pirate strong. holds are to be seen to this day North Point, east of Victoria in Hongkong, and at Sai Kung, villane in the New Territories.

A STURDY SEA SCOUT
KOWLOON LAD PASSES
TEST IN SWIMMING,
The cold weather, which seema this year to continue longer than usual, has caused a number of re- sidents to state that whilst a Hongkong winter is probably healthy, nevertheless they prefer tha summer owing to the fact whereas now they cannot get warm, in the summer, when it is really hot, at least they can get cool by scabathing. It would seem how- over that seabathing is not confined to the summer only, for we hear of a stalwart young Chinese sea scout, of one of the Kowloon packs, who on Saturday afternoon last passed his scouts swimming testa. Much credit is due to this lad owing to the fact that he is not an all-the- year-round bather, but, whilst he has accomplished a feat, we never- theless imagine that he must have taken to the water if not with fear at least with trembling. hardly to be expected that many people will follow his example at least for a few months...
