NEW BRITISH STEEL ENTERPRISES
EXPANSION TO COST £1,750,000
PRODUCTION OF WIRE RODS
of Whitecross Company of War- The Lancashire. Steel Corporation has acquired the well-known firm rington
This latter company manufac tures all kinds of wire products, And produces a similar class of finished goods as Rylands Brothers, which is one of the constituent com panics of the Lancashire Steel Corporation!
The Lancashire Steel Corpora tion was fromed some two years ago to take over the control of the iron and steel interests of the Partingtoo Steel and Iron Com pany, the Wigan Coal and Iron Company, Pearson and Knowles, and Rylands Brothers. It has an issued and paid-up capital of £4,280,000,
The present acquisition marke the continuance of the scheme of rationalisation w.ich was started by the formation of the Lancashire Steel Corporation,
Eliminating Imports.
That scheme included important new construction works involving outlays of about £1,370,000, the finance being provided by a finan- cial group, the bulk being con tributed by participants who are members of the Bankers' Industrial Development Company, a concerni brought out under the auspices of the Bank of England,
It is now proposed to put downs
a continuous wire rod mill, to be constructed in this country and to be ons of the largest and most maternyat known. The steel wire rods are to be manufactured from start to finish on the one site, and all waste transport from one worke to another will thus be eliminated and costs will be correspondingly cheapened.
The mill will allow. for the pro- duction of wire products, such as barbed wire, wire netting and wire nails to be entirely of British manufacture, - using British fuel pig iron and steel right throughout to the finished article.
This, it is suggested, will take the place of large quantities of billets or wire, rods which until now have been imported from the Continent.
It is maintained that the substi tution of the foreign supplies by British manufactures should be important factor in creating employment heroe
