WILL JAPAN WITHDRAW

FROM LEAGUE?

FOREIGN MINISTER WARNS-

COLLEAGUES

THAT, GRAVE DECISION FACES JAPANESE

EMPIRE

(THROUGH REVTER'S AGENCY]

Tokyo, January 95.

UNDER bold beadlines Grave decision confronting Empire,” "Great danger ahead," vernacular papers report the Cabinet special sessions, which heard Count Cchida's" report of the League's virtual abandonment of His efforts to conciliate the Sino- Japanese dispute.

The Foreign Minister werned his colleagues that they must be prepared shortly to make a decision of grave import,,

It is understood the meeting adjourned without decision, pending further developments at Geneva though it is generally be ileved the government holds that Japan is compelled to withdraw from the League if it charges Japan with territorial aggression or violation of the League Covenant against the War Pact or the Nine Power Pact,

SHANHAIKWAN NOT AN OPEN PORT

JAPANESE NO RIGHT TO

RESIDE THERE

(THROUGH REUTER'S AGENCY)

NANKING, Jan. 25.

SHANHAIKWAN is not an open

port and Japanese nationals have no right to reside there, states the Chinese Nots addressed to Mr. Ariyoshi and also cabled to Geneva for communication to the League,

The note lays all blame for the Shanhaikwax incident at Japan's door, and outlines the incidents leading up to the skirmish.

The Japanese accusations against the Chinese troops only reveal the customary Japanese tricks, and the assertions in the Japanese Note of January 11 do not accord the facts, states the Note.

NEW YEAR. :

"OLO CUSTOM" STRONGER THAN GOVERNMENT EDICT

To-day, the Chinese population in Hong Kong will be celebrating New Year-according to the Lamar Calendar. In spite of all efforts by the Nanking Government to in- stitate the Gregorian calendar, the prosent generation clings to the Fiimo honoured Now" Your on the first day of the first moon, when everybody wishes everybody else— Kung Hi Fat Choi, Grovt- ings, Good Luck."

Most of the Chinese population will celebrate the day by visiting their friends and relations and by sanding presents "of cakes, fruits and foodstuffs,

For the past four or five daya, thousands of people, have visited the New Year Bazar st...Wanchai where all sorts of edibles,, purios, gold fish and flowers, to mention, a Few more prominent lines of mer- chandise are offered for sale.

To the foreigner, the most inter- esting part of this bazaar is un doubtedly the flower section where all kinds of flowers that are grown in this part of Chinh are offered for sale.

Cut flowers command an espe cially high price because every householder endeavours to secure some of those to brighten their homes to-day and prices went up gradually during the last few days until last night very commonplace cut flowers commanded quite high a figure. In this connection, it was

In the bazaar at Wanchai, curio stores attracted many visitors who had never been to such bizkars -be- fore. Gold fish were also for sale. and some very pretty glass holders were exhibited.

Everywhere in the street yostor- day hawkers stalls grew up like mushrooms, the casual tradesman making full use of the New Year spirit to chrn a few dollars.

It might be thought that only the old-fashioned Chinese observe the Lunar New Year, but this is not trus at all as the modern and eða cated members of the community in. Hong Kong also observe this festival.

For the last few days, tailor shops have been busy with last- minute customers and barbars bad so much" business to cope. with (especially now that women as well as inen require hair-cute) that they put up prices a few days ago. In spite of this all barbars establish- ments wore still full...

The more modern section of the community, while observing. Now Year at home in traditional Chinese custom, take to dancing theatres and dinners in European style dur ing the present holidays and last night'e Now Year's Eve arrange- ments at the various botols were very well attended.

There must have been a record anla of irecrackers and joss (paper this year judging from the quantity fired last night. Most business firing are closing for three days, but some are sticking for the seven days holidays that had been the practice in former years.

THE PAST YEAR.

From a reliable Chinese business man, it is learned that although the past year was an eventful one, and though generally speaking business had been bad, the year has not been entirely without redeeming fes tures. From the bad stato of trade, it was generally anticipated during the summer that many shops and firms would suspend payment be fore Chinese New Year, but hap pily this has not come about, and although there have been me failures (a few of which were fairly substantial), on the whole the year was no worse than many of
