Variéty,

Normal Times Returning? In my opinion this trend toward betterment is not temporary nor is it a mero spurt in business which will dwindle after a certain period. Each day brings new lines of com. mercial activity which join in the opinion that the backbone of the Depression has been broken and that normal times are returning, Re-employment is on the way and that is of major importance. We never will be back to true prosper- ity until our unemployed once more are busy. Every effort is being made by employers to bring about this happy condition.

That prosperity is immediate, or around the corner is over-optimis- as so often described as being just tic. But, with the confidence which has been reborn in our people by this trend. toward good times I feel there can be no failure in the Battle of business against an econo mic depression, such as the United States never knew before in its history.

When the turn for the better came around the middle of this year, shipping seemed to feel its effect Several big almost immediately. spurts in the Eastbound intercoastal trade (North Pacific to North At- lantic) and also to Ue United King- dan were noted, but as is usual soon declined. However by "now with such sensational advances they there has been a good pickup in many routes, notably the Oriental, Hawaiian, Australian and West- bound Intercoastal, all showing steady gains which are holding. Every service in which the Dollar Line is engaged has shown slight tonnag? accumulative gains in since midsummer.

Of our coun- try's volume of laid-up tonnage, vice since, summer and more may a bit of it has gone back into ser be expected monthly...

Conference Control. Despite previously disturbed con- ditions it is noticable that confer ence control has been restored to a great extent after a moderate breakdown in 1931 In many cases rates have been raised, but of cours not to the levels prior to the dis solution of the conferences How- erer, bulk freights have been and still are moving at very unattrac tive rates.

That shipping is looking better and better is an opinion I have reiterated frequently in the paat few months. Volume is increasing gradually and I believe will con- tinue to pick up steadily. Ship- owners and operators can afford to take cheer in the trend of the last few months. It is a certainty that we could not have reached a much lower level than observed some six months back. Now there can be no question but that sentiment, among the shipping fraternity in this

Closer co-operation of shipowners country is much better. However, shipping men are not unmindful of of all nations in trade routes al the fact that there is still much over the world, is absolutely essen surplus tonnage in the Trans-Atlantial in order to hasten the retura tie trades, with new Italian lines of prosperity to shipping. With the English and French lines and this accomplished, equitable rates other ships planning to go into could be established and maintain-

ed, thus placing shipping on a fir commission 8000.

basia

Conservative management and 1. cheaper operation are two lessons which came out of the difficult period of the depression... Necessity of retrenchment taught shipowners, not only in the United States, but elsewhere new ways to operate and still provide adequate, and Deficient service.

In conclusion, I believe that the present rate of gain shown, in American shipping is indicative of material upward trend in busi-

Shipbuilding, The volume of merchant ship building throughout the world for the first time in fifty years la fallen below the 1,000,000 ton mark, as was recently revealed by Lloydeness of the world, for the improve- Rogister of Shipping. Decreases nent in this industry in one coun- were reported in the quarter be try cannot fail to react favourably tween June and September by all throughout the world.

With the recent addition of gaso line, carbon bisulphide and sugar, altogether 22 lines of industries arc being governed by the Staple In- dustry Control Law. Such cartels have hitherto been formed at the free will of industrialists themselves, but as exemplified by the recent establishment of the Electric Power League, there are signs of bankers' taking the initiative. Remarkable progress is also seen in trusts..

Amalgamations,
