The King, who was the largest individual exhibitor at the Smith- feld Chub Show, at the Agricultural Hall, Islington, was awarded seven Srst, two second, and two third. prizes, as well as three silver cups in the cattle sections; while a pen of Southdown sheep from the Royal farms at Sandringham: gained a | third prize; His Majesty had 24

Despite the uncertainty as to the future of the British fivestock in

dustry and the depression in agri- eature generally, the list of entries was one of the best recorded. There were 300 head of cattle, 109 entries of sheep, and 279 entrics in the pig classes.

The first Show "was held in 1700 in Wootton's Dulphia. Yard, Smith- feld. These were two classes for. cattle and two for sheep, and the tatal prize money was 50 guineus. This year's Show has 39 classes for cattle, 38 for sheep, 31 for pizza, and 14 slaughter classes, and the prize list totals £3,250.

Animals from all over the roan- try are competing during the week for awards which will enhance their dend value beyond all com- parison with ordinary market prices: Within the next few days there will appear in butchers' shops in all areas aides of beef, adorned with multi-coloured rosettes, sig, nifying that the animals found favour with the judges at the Smithfield Show.
