PROTEST OVER SHANHAI-
KWAN ATTACK
NANKING, Jan. 6. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs; sent a strong Note of Protest to the Japanese Legation late last night with regard to the Japanese attack and occupation of Shanhai kwan.
The Note first narrates the pre- liminary work of destruction done
by the Japanese gendarmes in their own quarters; and then the distor- tion of facts concerning the cir cumstatices preceding the attack in an attempt to evade responsibility for their unwarranted.action.
The Note further states that the operations of the Japanese troope At Shanhaikwem are clearly tho execution of a preconceived plan calculate to aggravate the situa tion and contrary to the promise repeatedly made by the Japanese delegates to the Lengua of Nation.
La conclusion the Note demands the immediate withdrawal of the Japanese troops from Shanhai- kwas, the prevention of similar cccurrences in the future, and the punishment of thou Japanese who started the disturbance. It further reserves the right of the Chinese Government to claim reparation for the damagen mustained by the Chinese...

At the same time the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a long statement clearly showing that the Japanese operations at Shanbai kwin were premeditated and car- ried out in the most methadies! manner. The statement reads nf follows:-
