JARDINE'S SHOCK TACTICS REAP EARLY REWARD: BRADMAN BOWLED FOR A "DUCK”.
{THROUGH REUTER'S AGENCY.]
Macbourne, December 30,
THE second Test match began here to-day is very hot weather when 50,000 people saw W. M. Woodfull, the Australian skipper beating D. R. Jardine, England's leader, in the spia.. Woodfull, naturally, enough, decided to have first knock, but with their win in the first Test still fresh in their minds, the visitors took the field tuli, of confidence.
Woodfull and Fingleton opened the innings for Australia and taking advantage of the Bery state of the wicket, Jardine entrusted the English attack to Larwood and Voce. The kome team soon found that run-getting was no easy matter and se successful were the English bowlers that Austraila had lost seten wickets for but 197 runs when straps were drawn. The scasation of the day came when Don Bradman was bowled first ball by Bowes after he had been accorded a terrific welcome from all parts of the field.

Wondfull had been batting for fifty-three minutes and returned to the pavilion crest fallen.

O'Brien joined Fingleton who by this time indulged in some very gud shots to the legside and these two batsmon brought the total to 12 for 1 when a halt was made.for lunch. Fingleton had scored 27 while the newcoiner had three to his credit and "Mr. Extras!! con- tributed a couple.
A Foolish Call,
The crued has swelled, to 60,000 when play was resumed after lunch and once again Larwood and Voce atarted the attack for England.
The half-century was
hoisted after play had been in progress for 4 minutes and nine runs later Bowes came on for Voce. Fingle- ton turned the new bowler to for ward leg and called for what ap- peared an impossible run. Pautadi dashed in and made a smart return to Ames who broke the wickets to send O'Brien back with 10 runs to his credit-67-2-10. This player had been batting for 65 minutes and had been putting up a very stubborn defence.
Bowled First Ball.
The crowd rose to a man when the familiar figure of Don Brad- man was seen emerging from the pavilion. He was accorded a right royal welcome and excitement was teise as he shaped for the first ball from Bowes. The bowler, ran up to the wickets, his arm flashed.in the air and then crack: Brad man was bowled first ballt: Nothing, however, can dim Austra tralia's faith in her idol and even as he returned to the pavilion, he was given another great ovation. 67-3-0 on the score board read well' for England especially as they had got rid of two of Australia's moet dangerous batsmen in Woodfull and the redoubtable Don. The English team were on their toes, Allen and Leyland especially being brilliant in some of their returns,
A-Dogged-Partnership.
Grim faced and determined, Stan MoCabu inade his way to the crease. Would he make another century against this team of shock bowlers! He batted with utmost caution and in the meantime Fingleton was scor ing slowly, but steadily to get his half-century in 141 minutes. The partnership had realised 50 ruds in 52 minutes and at the les ju! terval the score was 190 for 3 Singleton was andoleated with 07. while McCabe's 60076 WAS 2av.

Fingleton batted. excellently and his cutting and leg-shots were beautifully executed. He was at the wickets for 234 minutes and in the course of acoring 83-runs he found the boundary only three times. Allen's figures at this stage were for 30.

Batting for soventy-four minutes, Richardson found the ropes five times and during the course of his knock which produced 34 runs, he brought off some of his characteristic pulls. 66 Grimmett joined Oldfield who con timted to bat doggedly, but the newcomer had only scored two when, he was ought by Sutcliffe at fine-leg off Voce.
