But there's a reason for it, and a soot one, according to Josef von Sternberg, aco Hollywood director, who made Marlene Dietrich's latest starring picture, "Blonde Venus," which comes to the King's Theatre next Sunday.
Players do not work in costumes of simple back and white because the monotony of the combination would kill every spark of creative effort, he explains,

While all the world may. love a lover, it doesn't follow that all the. world loves a dancer or two dan. cers. Thus James Dunn and Sal- ly Ellers encounter plenty of ob stacles and hard knocks before they finally win their way to Broadway success for their terpsichorean efforts. And with the crown of suc ces upon their heads they discover that their troubles are only begin ning, for like so many of our cele brities they find it more difficult to hold on to fame than to achieve it.

Servants' Hall.
The story is laid in a servants, hall in an Austrian castle. Gil bert, who plays the villain, enters the castle downstairs," as a ser: vant and spreads sinister tentacles all through the estate. He is an engaging villain, however, despite his deeds.
One of the big sets shows a great castle kitchen in full blast, with the servants preparing a hunt Jun- cheon. Tons of food were prepar ed. The set, designed from actual- ity, is an odd mixture of ancient) and modern; wood range and elec trio egg beater, old fashioned ice- box and mechanical dishwasher, arg side by side.
Most European kitchens, Monta Bell, the director, explains were built years ago, and as modern im provements were perfected, only those were added which would not. involve tearing down walls or al- tering the structure itself.
An elaborate cast appears in the -now-drama,--Virginia Bruce plays the heroine, and Paul Lukas is Gilbert's nemesis as the ve¤geful. butler. Hedda Hopper, Bodil Rosing, Otto Hoffman, Lucien Littlefield and Marion Lessing sre among the players. Elaborate re- productions of a great old World atate form spectacular settings for the prodiction.

The story as told on the screen is convincingly real, full of thrill- ing incidents, and enacted by a cast which is exceptional. Leo Carrillo as Louis Grenado, leader of a gung of racketeers, is superb. A master of Italian dialect, his performance is easy and entirely natural, and he brings to his role a sinister menace that is at times overwhelm- ing
Mary Brian, in the leading femi nine role, is altogether charming, and Noah Beary contributes a par ticularly forceful characterization
