JOCKEY CLUB'S LOSS OF $17,000 LAST YEAR
MR.. G. H. POTTS APPEALS
FOR MORE SUPPORT
Mr. . H. Potts, who presided at the annual meeting of the Macao Jockey Club, Inst briday, made a strong appeal to Maono residents to give better support to racing. which was not only a sport but a | source of revenue to the Colony. The Club had not had the best of Tuck during the year and the less had been "$17,000 odd.
MR. POTTS SPEECH
Mr. U. H. Potta said:
The Stowards regret having to come before you with accounts showing a loss of $17,000 odd. This is accounted for largely through the heavy expenses which have been in curred, and the loss of a draft of subscription ponica in Shanghai, which upset our arrangements for at least one meeting. In the earlier part of the period covered by the accounts, we were paying a salary of $1,000 a month to the Racing Secretary, who severed his connee tion with the Club on proceeding Home on medical advice, and that salary has been saved.
Two Meetings. Abandoned. A contributory cause to the loss was an outbreak of meningitis in Macao, which forced us to postpone a meeting there, as it was evident that very few residents of this Colony would go to Macao so long hs the outbreak, lasted. Through the courtesy of the Stewards of the Kwanti Racecourse, we were offered their

unfortunately, owing to the inclement weather, we had to abandon the, meeting as the course was under water hereby losing between $1,500 and 2,000.
Grant of Land,
The Macao Government has grant ed us an extra pieco of land for the extension of our stables, on which at the present time, we have erect od tenporary matsheds. I hope however, in the future when we are, în funds to be able-to-crect per- martint stables,
It is gratifying to report that the 28 subscription ponies, of which 19 have already arrived have been subscribed for, and when the balance

<Appeal: to" Macao Residents.
The draw for Captain's Cup, 1932, I think you will agree with me of the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club that the racing has heen good at 'all meetings held by us and it is
matter for regret that the resi loats in Macao do not take the intorost in racing that we should have been lead to expect, and I wincerely hope that members of the Club will do their utmost to in- orest Macao residents in racing. If Masno residents would assists by owning ponies and generally take up racg, it would not only be very oneouraging" "but would enable us to dopent loss on ponies from Hong Колк
I think we may claim without- duly fattoring ourselves, that we have not only afforded the residents in Macao with good racing, but have benefitted the Colony Bnancially,
With these faw remarks, I will now move the adoption of the re port and accounts as presented and aftor the resolution has been duly seconded I shall be pleseed to an- swer any questions to the best of my ability.
The resolution was Rotonded by Mr. G. A. Harriman and carried nnanimously.
