LESSON SERMON:

FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST, HONG KONG

God the preserver of man" was the subject of the Lesson Benuan in all: Churches of Christ, Scientist on Sunday, December 11,

The Golden Toxt was "As the mountains are round about Jerusa "Tom, so the Lord is round-about-his people from henceforth even for

ever. (Ps, 15% 20 M

Among the citations which com- prised the. Lesson Sermon was the 0

rider, as few private owners' are likely to invest in the double drive outfit, which is not necessary for ordinary work on average roads, Thus from the competition point al view there are good reasons for banning sidecar wheel drive j

The Austin Sixteen ambulanco was also shown, and all three ex- hibits exemplified the most advanced ambulance practice, both in respect of the vehicle, and the equipment fitted, including stretcher-gears.

MORE EMPLOYMENT.

AUSTIN FACTORY'S 13,000

WORKERSūn

To cope with the growing demand for its products both at home and abroad, the Austin factory at Long bridge is now working at full pres-

sure.

Since the new Austin programme was announced the number of em ployees has rapidly increased and the payroll now includes 13,000 workers.

DAIRY FARM

Farm beg to announce that there is in rumour that Turkeys are scarce this at least not so far as they are con-

They suggest, however, that potential buyers would be well advised to place their orders as early as possible.

THE DAIRY FARM, ICE & COLD STORAGE CO. LTD.

On the other hand it is always a pity to ban anything in this way, because it may be checking a useful development. Indeed, if the side car outfit is to be regarded as unit, and not a solo motor cycle with attachment, then the two-wheel drive is really a logical develop

ment

The high-powered combination, ol which the motor cycle, is seldom uacd separately, should really be de- signed as a eingle unit, in which caso a live axle is not going to cat very must more and would give a much more practical machine. The chase, of course, is quite different where the lighter combination is concerned, so that there is quite a pretty problem for those who have to decido what should be done na regards open trials at least.

THREE WHEELS AT THE KELVIN HALL

"There will not be much to in- terest, the motor cyclist as such at the Kelvin Hall," says the Glasgow. Herald, but it may be noted that there will be a three-wheeler on view. This is the Raleigh van shown in the commercial section, and there has been a relaxation in the regulations apparently in view of the fact that there has been no motor eyele show this year, for the B.S.A. passenger three-wheeler was shown at the Olympia car show. Next year with a motor cycle show no doubt these examples will become moter cycles again; although a com Imercial vehicle, whether it has three wheels or fivas one hng-should be in a commercial show.

The motor cyclist no doubt wi be interested in the bare chassis shown, and there will be over a dozen of these which is considerably more than usual, Mechanically the chief interest is in four cylinders, side valves, and new transmissiona -mostly too elaborate for motor- cycle purposes.

RINGS ROUND THE

NORTH POLE

SCIENTIST'S EXPLAINS MARINERS' COMPASS

ERRORS

OTHER SAVANTS DISAGREE

A claim that the North Magnetic Pole travels continually in a great elliptical path around the North Pole proper is made by: Professor. See, of the. United States Observa- tory at Mare Island, California.

Ha also believes that the South- Pole travels in a similar path, though in the opposite direction, thereby explaining errors in the mariners' compass all over the world.

+

Professor Sod'a calculations dis agree with recent findings of other -scientists concerning theesuse of shifts of the magnetic poles, called their secular variations."

Each pole, he says; takes 540 yeaYA for one journey around, The north magnetic path is so big that it is about 1.700 miles noross from the -point where it passes north of La brador to the opposite side, which lies between Central Siberia and the North Pole

The North Magnetic Pole travela this path clockwise The South Magnetic Pole moves in an ellipse a little amallar counter-clockwise,

The main cause of the elliptical rotation, he holds, is the strong magnetic field of the sun, A los sor magnetic field of the moon has same effect,

Scientists in recent studies have held that the variations of the magnetic polas cannot be explain ed so simply. They find (saya Reu ter) the fluctuations due partly to. regional phenomena the effects. coming from large, deep layers of the earth's crust, such as contin ants and mountains

They have also said that they are not certain that the paths fol lowed by the shifting magnetic poles are de uniforms as Professor Bee states pa
