BIG ITEM FOR WATER WORKS

were Votes totalling 8134,174 approved by the finance Committee of the Legislative Council yester day, over which the Hon. Mr. E H. Halifax, Colonial Secretary, presided.

Of the total, several very big items, amounting to $67,000 ward in connection with water works.

Beside the chairman, there were present, Hon. Mr. Edwin Taylor, Colonial Treasurer, Hon. Mr. B. M. Henderson, Director of Public Works, Sir Henry Pollock, Hon. Mr. W. E. L. Shenton, Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotowall, Hon. Mr. J. P. Braga, Hon. Mr. J. J. Paterson, Hon. Mr. W. E. Bell, Hon. Mr. T. N. Chao and Mr. R. A. C North, Clerk of Councils.

Details of the items making up the 8134,174 will be found below. Only one itera, that for 850,000 provoked any comment. The Hon. Mr. Braga asked for information as regards a statement in the ex- planatory note where it was stated that the price of coal for 1832 wa $3 per ton more than in 1931. Mr. Braga asked if the Government was aware that in the latter part of 1938 the price of coal has dropped considerably-about 20 per cent on the price of 1831.
