More than a thousand men will
be employed in the overhauling of the Mauretania. More than 300 will be needed to coax this 30,600-ton giant into the dry dock, and many hundreds more to chip and repaint the hull and bottom.
Every square inch of the ship will be inspected by officials, who will decide on the repairs and whether to change the lay-out of the cabins. In past years scores of cabins have been reconstructed and modernised during these overhauls.
Notwithstanding the number of men engaged, it will be a month before the Mauretania will sail
from Southampton again. The day after she leaves the Aquitania will take her place for a clean-up that Twill last until January 4, and, will T110 in turn he repiced by the Beren-

Amazon and Orinoco.
"I am going to let out here a delicious piece of exportation I have been keeping up my sleeve for many years, but which, I am afraid, I shall never find time to do. As you all know, two big rivers, the Amazon and the Orinoco, run east and west across the top of South America. Part of the Orinoco gets tired about, halfway and curves back from west to cast. Hydraulic arrangements are crazy. The Ama zon bead" at Mannos,, a thou sand miles from the pen, is only 30 degrees, above sea level, and the two rivers, by means of tributaries, exchange water at the further side of South America.
