Arosy, Nov. 3. THE subseription lists for the new £300,000,000 three per cent. conversion loan, which opened at nine o'clock this morning, were! closed three and a quarter hours later,

It is understood that the loan has been largely oversubscribed.

Although the lists had been closed, investors were still able to subscribe! through the Post Offices. Such ap- plications were, however, limited to £1,000 each but were assured of falt allotment provided they were lodg ed some time to-dny.

The success of to-day'a issue comple. tes the remarkable refinazeing pro- gramma which started a little over four months ago. Beginning with £9,000,000,000 of five per cent, war loan, Britain's internal indebtedness has been cleared of all issues carry- ing interest excessively high under the existing conditiops.

In the Commons this afternoon, the Chancellor of Exchequer, in reply to a question, stated that the estimated saving due to the conver- sion operations was something over £38,000,000 annually in, a full year.

Government Stocks Weaker.

British Government stocks opened with a weaker tendency-to-day after the substantial rises which followed the announcement of the loan. There was a rally when lists were closed but profit taking accounted for later falls. War loan aesented closed at 001, Consols 21 per cent at. and Consols 4 per cefit. 1081,

Sir Francis Goodenough, chair- man of the British Commercial Gus Association, at a luncheon at Dum- barton to oelebrate the town's centenary of gas supply, said he felt confident that this winter would see the beginning of the end of trade depression.

Ho added:

"What is going to bo our line in the interval? Are we holding our, heads in our hands waiting for someone else to push us along, or are wo gelting ourselves ready to take advantage of the first signs of revival, with our organisations for production and for marketing overhauled, our staffa well trained and, enger, and our plans well thought out, so that they can be put quickly in action 7
