LONDON AS CHIEF

VALOREM PORT

Since the introduction of the new import duties the British Cus- toms Department has had to face, and has achieved with remarkable success, the greatest readjustment and expansion in its history.

The record of the department may be expressed in terms of money in the increase in the last six months

of £17,000,000 in revenue collected. But this by no means indicates the magnitude of the department's new tasks.

One of the features of the change is that London has proved to be the greatest ad valorem port." So far as the new import duties are concerned, about 40 per cent. of the increase has been obtained from London, and the other places mainly affected are Liverpool, Manchester, Harwich, Hull, Grimsby, Boutharap ton, Glasgow and Leith..

Administration Hampered.

The London Customs have been driven to find accommodation in several places outside the Custom House. The old duties are still re- ceived in the famous Long Room there, but the ad valorem duties are collected at the new branch at 'Ade- laide House.

The administration is very much hampered by lack of proper accom modation, and, if the financial situa tion of the country permitted, a new Custom House would be very ac ceptable. The provincial Christon Houses are much more imposing and more suitable.

IN THE

ROOF

"GARDEN

DAILY

The additional staff required by the whole department during the „past twelve months has now amounted to over 700. This add- tion-hardly excessive has been secured mainly by transfers from other dephilmonts,
