the Despite these conditions, Orient doubled the amount of
American raw cotton consumed and increased purchases of wheat and flour, respectively, by 261 and 32 рег cent. By doubling is purchases of cotton goods, the Philippines afforded an outlet for one-third of the total amount ex- |ported from the United States. These islands also led in purchases of cigarettes. In contrast, the value of automotive products declined by 133 per cent iron and steel, 43 per cent; machinery, 20 per cent the amount of lumber, 21 per cent; and leaf tobacco, 77 per cent, -

Bummary,
October 15.-A reaction in security prices was precipitated during the week under review by nervousness in the political situation and weakness in commodity prices. The recession-in stocks was ended when genuine support came in on Tuesday, but on the next trading day the market failed to hold the im- provement. Business news was moderately favourable through-- out the week. Steel production continued to make steady upward stridos, percentage of capacity operations increasing to 10%.
·Carlowdings for the week ending October 8, turned up consider- ably. Banking figures which made their appearance during the weck showed batterment. Investments of reporting member banks have risen, along with gold monetary stocks. Call money dropped. to 1%. Commodity prices sagged.
Outlook-It does not appear probable that the decline which was quite sorcierœantly" will go very much further The new sonal rise in business statistics by this time so plain, will continue. for the next several weeks, and this ought for the present to be a sustaining influence.
London, Oct. 1-The following statement was issued last evening from the Treasury: The Five per Cent. War. Loan Conversion offer having been closed at the end of business to-day-Sept. 30—the Chancellor of the Exchequer on- pounces that, out of the total amount of the Loan outstanding on June 30 lart--i.e. £2,085,000,000,·| approximately, £1,990,000,000 ống teen converted, leaving only | £145,000,000, or 8 per cent. to be
redeemed in cash on December 1.
The Conversion operation having now-bera completed, the Chancellor fools that no further restrictions in
| the way of new issues are required, with the exception of Foreign. issues that is, on behalf of bor rowers domiciled outside the Em pire or issues, the proceeds of which would be remitted abroad; and the optional replacement of existing issues by new issues involving" either underwriting or an invita tion to the public to subscribe now enah.
Many industrial companies are already taking advantage of the cheap money conditions to reduce the burden of their prior charge capital.
