As suggested in last year's port an annual increase is to be expected as a result party of the natural inerrase in the population, especially at the higher ages, al which cancer is most prevalent, partly of increasing ability to verug, nize the disease in the less accessible | argans, quite independently of an actual increased incidence which may he reurring.

The average of fatal accidents, on the road in England and Wales in 1031 was 16 per day; and 500 injured daily. The largest number of deaths and injuries occurred in the month of August, and 1,320 of the deaths were caused in the Metropolitan Police district. Happily the total number of persons killed in Great Britain in 1001 was 014 less than iu 1930.

to be taken into neenant na a set- off 'to lower fuel consumption. į Hence each design has to ly con- sidered on its own merits and a balance struck.

For instance, in cross-channel vessels or river steamers making very short passages (five or six miles between stops) superheating is of less value than in ocean going vessels making hug passages. If its adoption, leads to a reduction of cabin accommodation, and hence income, it might be a disadvantage from a commercial point of view. In many cases simplicity with re- liability may be more important than low consumption with grea- tor complication.

Benson Super-Pressure Steam. Boller.

A distinct advance, from economical point of view, has been made in the Benson Super-Pressure Boiler, the principal of which is the raising of pressure and tempora ture beyond the critical stage. It has been found by research and calculation that if water with a prossure of 220 atmospheres (3,230 Ib. per sq. in.) is heated to about 375 degresa C. (707 degrees F.) its state of aggregate is perfectly changed.. Beyond this limit the steam existe only as n gas.

After having passed the above limit, we are sure that the gas does not contain any molcules of water drops.

The boiler itself, without acces sories, weighs 32 tons.

The water or steam content al- together weighs only about one ton. As to material used for the boiler it should be mentioned that: the pipes of the radiating part ex- posed to the highest temperature of Are gases consist of stie] 0.4 per cent. molybdenum.

The 32 headers of the radiating part are made from solid ingots of Seimens-Martin-steel and the pipes have been welded to them. The aflciency of the Benson -Boiler has been found by several trials to be DO per cent.

With one lb. of fuel oil, 13 Tbs. steam can be generated and thus it is possible to generate one S.H.P.

per hour with an oil consumption of 0.47 lb.

Internal-Combustion Engines.

With the introduction of the tar-
