16/50 H.P. HUMBER.

The 18/50 h.p. Humber Saloon is u type of car which appeals to the British motorist. It has that feel and finish which speak of attention to detail in construction, of good taste, and of modernness of build founded upon experience,

There is nothing about the body which looks shoddy or cheap, and the coachwork has a quiet air ofį luxurious comfort. The rear cushion is soft, broad, and not too much

Berlin. -- The German Motor Grand Prix, sponsored by the German Automobile Club, was held on the Nurburg Ring in the Adenau Forest. No Britons com- peted in the unlimited class, but Earl Howe made a spirited bid to win the 800 c.e. to 1,500 c.c. class event. Earl Howe, driving his special Dalage, found that the ear was too long for the narrow hair- pin bends, which continually forend him to stop. In consequence, at the finish he was no nearer than fourth, his time for the 524.63 kilometres (approximately 23 miles) being shr, 13min 34 1-56cc., which gave him an average of 99.9 k.p.h. (np. proximately 02 m.p.h.).

This difference in the decline of earnings and sales may be account ed for, according to the New York Evening Post, by the fact that in the first quarter of 1931 the motor eat industry-again excluding

The 30 per cent, figure, is under what a considered to be the "dan ger like" because, when a plant is operated at 40 per cent, of its caps city, it is generally understood that it has reached the marginal operat ing ratio between operating at profit and operating at a loss.

Factory Sales.

Operating at 40 per cent. of capacity in the first quarter of 1931, the industry had factory sales of about 360,000,000 dollars (£72,000,000 at par), from which they derived net earnings of nearly 10 per cent.

In the first quarter of 1932- operating at 30 per cent. of capa- city the sales amounted 250,000,000 dollars (£50,000,000) from which pet carnings amounted' to only 1 per cent.

Frequent reports, states Reuter in a message from New York, in- dicate that several manufacturers intend to enter the low-priced field, compding with Ford, Chevrolet and Plymouth.

Commenting on such statement, the New York Evening Post con-i siders that such a move at the pre- sent time is regarded as "highly dangerous.,

"It appears to be a leap in the dark," the journal says, "in the hope that it will result in increased production. It is believed to be betler to reorganise capital struc tures on the basis of present stock prices and eliminate some of the unncessary capacity - upon

which the companies are now trying to cain dividends.

Not a Luxury.

"In the face of the present terrible economic conditiont 450,000,000 dollars · (£00,000,000 M 'par) have already been spent by the nublie in the first five months of this year for passenger cars. Last year 780,000,000 dollars (£150,000,- Coo) were spent in a corresponding period.
