The making of satin in Nanking is a household handicraft, there be

firms buy silk (the warp is bought from Changan and Siashib, while the woof comes from Hang chow and Huchow and dis. tribute .it to the dyers. After dyeing, the silk is given out to weavers who work at home either
on their own looms or with looms provided by the firms. When finish- ed, the weavers carry the bolts of Anting to the dealors, and receive their pay in exchange.
In making plain satin only one man sits at the loom, but in pro- ducing figured material a second operator is required, who sits above the loom and, by altering the posi- tions of the threads in the warp, produces the figured design, 'About 10 days. is required for one mani to finish a plain bolt, or for two. men to complete a bolt of figured satin.

In addition to those engaged in making natin, there are 25 brocade makers in the city,' with 39 looms. Their products are of two kinds:Buenos Aires the ef yang luan manufactured ex- clusively for export to Europe and America, and the kin cluang tuan used by the lamas of Mongolia, Tibet, and other northern provinces for gowns, acreens, and table-covers.
