"Y.M.C.A" BEATEN

SWIMMERS HAVE ENJOY- ABLE COMPETITION.

A very enjoyable swimming gala was held in Shameen on Saturday when the Y.M.C.A. met the Shameen Swimming Club in a series of com- petitions. The events were closely contested and although the home team won the local side gave a good account of itself and carried off both the team race and the water polo,

HOW JOHNSTONE WAS BEATEN.

THRILLING RACE OVER "220."

RAVEN'S RECORD BREAKING SWİM DESCRIBED.

The North China Daily News gives the following description of how "Jimmy" Johnstone was besten over the 220 yards free style in Shanghai on August 20 at

the Shanghai Rowing Club, Tho race went to O H. Raven in the record time of 2 minutes 38,8 seconds.

In the 220 yd. J. R. Johnstone, the previous record holder, put up

a great display, and took the lead at the start. He went out to -4. yard's advantago over Raven at the

first turn and was increasing this all the way, being five yards ahend at the turn for the fourth length. In the middle of the fourth length,

Ravon · · commenced to spurt and gradually overcame the lead. He

came up level in the middle of the fifth length and at the turn into

the sixth the two were fighting for

the lead. Raven's extra stamina stood him in good stead and be

went ahead to turn three yards ahead of Johnstone, and in the final

burst Raven came in to break the record. Jack Doughty came with a great spurt towards the end to bent Fingoroth for third place.
