A PEIPING SCANDAL.
(TO THE EDITOR OF THE
I
DAILY PRESS."]
HONG KONG
Sin-Chinese dancing girls in Peiping have migrated to foreign lands and the object of the Nan king Government's order for their suppression bas been completely de- fented. The curious thing is that some of the dancing halla, in which the dancing girls claim imannity, no longer possess extra-territor iality rights. In this connection, the following may be of interest to your readers.
The ancini evil which has sprung up in Peiping as a result of the introduction during the past couple of years of Chinese public dancing girls, has already had a very demo- rolizing effect on the 70,000 schval boys and girls here. Peiping is an educational centres of Chinu with up-to-date modern Universities where co-education exists. Res. pectable families also live in this ideal residential city.
Public dancing halls, presumably under foreign registration, and with Chinese publie dancing girls, are open every night until the small hours of the morning and girls from Shanghai, Tientsin and the "licensed quarters" outside Chienmen in Peiping hrcome dane- ing girls. Thus the red light district" in Peiping is practically deserted. Girls of ill-fame have a new fald open to them for their immoral activities, and respectable families, who have become the victims of the present economic conditions, are permitting their daughters to become dancing girls.
Boy students attracted by these dancing girls visit these places every night in the week, Their study is neglected and the purpose for which they have been sent to Peiping by parents is entirely for gotten and the expenditure in- She- volved is a serious matter. dent suicides have also been re- ported. Owing to these dancing halls and the facilities for immor ality, it is not surprising that veneren! disease in Priping is on the increase.
The most unfortunate part of the present situation is that girl students of comparatively limited means enticed by the fascinating social life and the wilucement offered, snoner or later become the victims of eizenmatocès.
It
without saying that gous parents who send their children to Peiping to purano higher education, will soon be insisting or proper stepa being taken to end this scandal and enforce discipline.
China is spending millions of dollars an education overy year, including remissions of the Boxer Indemnity. It is high time that these abuses should cease.-Yours, etc.
