KOWLOON GARRISON
SCHOOL
PRIZE-GIVING AND DISPLAY OF WORK.
REPORT AND G.O.C.'S CONGRATULATIONS.
There is a very old dispute, as to whether the Island or the Mainland is the healthier for children. But in comparing the children of the Hong Kong Garrison School at the rescat prize- giving with those of the Kowloon Garrison School, yesterday, there is little to be said either way-scholars of both schools' look healthy, bright and happy.
At the Kowloon Garrison School's Annual Prize Giving at Gun Club Hill Barracks, yesterday, Lieut-Col. Thom pointed out that the average attendance for the past twelve months bas bern D1 per cent This is very much in keeping, with Captain Caution's report on the Hong Kong School last Wednesday, when bo gave the average attendance as 02 per cent. for the year.
Visitors entering the door of the hall yesterday, were at first somewhat bewildered. The once-bare room was gaily decorated with coloured bunting-ferns and flowers and Bags wore grouped around the platform where a table on the platforms was laden with an imposing pile of books. Suddenly, our representative found a little chap standing by him holding up a little book-" Pro- gramme, Sir? "
"Oh yes, thanks very much." On the front was a very clover drawing of an old Norman castle-Embattlements and slit-win- down complete. Inside were given the songs to be sung by the infant and older children. One song in particular, by the seniora was exceptionally good, namely Amid the New Mown Hay."
CREDITABLE HAND WORK AND EXAM. PAPERS.
To use the old stock phrase "the programme went through without a hitch.” After the singing of "God Save the King," one of the senior boys, stepped forward, and called for three cheers for H.E. the Gneral Oficer Commanding. After this everyone trooped down to the school and wandered through the rooms, gazing at the coloured pictures painted by the children and noting with interest the hand works displayed. The examination papers were all on view, and anxious mothers turned over pages to find how little "Tommy" or Baby Joan" had got on with his (or her) arithunctie. or spelling. On another table the girls' needlework was set out.. Pretty little dresses for "Dolly" and pair of short pants for "Teddy." The future housekeepers are indend being well trained,
H.E. the General was na usual, moving about among the children, speaking to one here and another there. He arrived as always on time and the bells were striking ten as he entered the hall and took his stat on the platform. Other officers en the platform were Lieut. Col. J. H. Thom, D.S.O., O.C. Schools, Capt. D. R. M. Cameron (the A.D.O.), Father O'Brian, Lieut. Musson and the Bev. McLean.
COMMANDING OFFICER'S
REPORT.
Lt. Col. Thor, the Officer Com manding Schools. in his annual report for the year ending 31st July, 1032, said:—
There have been several changes in the Staffs of the Garrison Schools, Kowloon, since last year. Misa Adams, Miss Mudd and Miss Hibberd have returned to the United Kingdom on completion of their tour here. We welcome their successors, Miss Blackman, Miss Pennicott and Miss Coghlan, and hope that they will enjoy their stay in Hong Kong.
The Boy Scouts and Girl Guides include many of our children among their members.
The library has profited by the addition of several books kindly presented by various parents These gifts are much appreciated by the staff and children.
The discipline of the children and thein general behaviour and bearing have been uniformly good and reflect great credit on both parents and teachers."
I wish to express the thanks of the staff to all those who have helped our work during the pust year. The number and quality of the prizes to be presented to-day is very largely due to the genero
