GARRISON SCHOOL PRIZE - GIVING
THE G.O.C'S. INTEREST IN GARRISON
EDUCATION.
CHILDREN'S WELFARE IMPORTANT
PART OF HIS DUTY.
Before distributing the prizes at the Garrison School's Annual Prize Distribution in the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps Drill Hall, yesterday, H.E. the General Officer Commanding (Major-General J. W. Sandilands, C.B., C.M.G., 1.8.0.), said:- "I have always taken a considerable interest in the wolfare of our children. I regard it as being just as much part of my duties to seo that they are well looked after and cared for, as to deal with important military problems concerned with the defence of Hong Kong."
This remark of His Excellency's was the keynote of the pro- ceedings. The prize-giving was a very happy avent, and the mov- ing spirit was the distinguished general, who, is obviously regard. ed as their ideal of a senior British officer by the youngsters.
The uniforms of the British Army Officers formed a striking contrast against the light summer dresses and fair hair of the child- ron. The girls were for the most part in thin silk or crêpe de ekine dresses of white and creun, although there was also a sprinkling of brighter colours. The boys looked very smart in white starched shirts and shorts.
The hall was packed to the door; many ollicers and soma 200 par- ents being present together with the school children and the teach- ing staff. Those present on the platform were Mr. G. P. de Martin (Director of Education), Col. C. R. U. Barila, D.5.0., O.B.E., General Officer Commanding, Major-General J. W. Sandilands, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., Capt. P. S. Caton, M.A., A.E.C., and Lt. Col. G. T. Raiken. D.8.0., S.W.B.
