MR. GEORGE LANSBURY'S MESSAGE ON 73rd BIRTHDAY.

BY THE RIGHT HON. GEORGE LANSBURY, M.P.
Everything which prevents, this must be removed. We must clear the road, so that all may become one great family.
Years ago, when my mind was, relationships with each other. just opening and books became a treasure-house of knowledge and understanding. I discovered that all surts of people wrote about ro- ligion, ethics, and history, giving conflicting views and thoughts about creeds and theories of life and conduct.
Sometimes I believed, or thought
In this connection I like to think of St. Francis bursting the bonds which tied him to. a rich home, and going forth, not into seclusion, but

Then, reading another book, my mind would go back to A belief in God and eternity.
Now, after a long experience of life, I am less dogmatic about many things. Yet for myself and for my own satisfaction there are some things which become more and more certain.
I have no doubt about the exist ence of Gud, the highest and best my weak intelligence knows.
I am sure that the thing we call prayer is real, and is summed up in the words: "Prayer is the

I am also confident that in somo way which I cannot explain life. is eternal.
Beenuse this is so, I accept na literally true-the teachings of the great religious teachers and pro- phets of the ages, of whom the greatest and most to be accepted is Jesus. He has taught me that love is the one redeeming power in the world, and however much we may legislate, however much we may restrain, there can be, will be, no peace, contentment and happiness in the world until love in the law of our life.
Statesmen, economists, and we, the common people, argue and quarrel; we talk of intellect an against heart, and cry aloud that our brains and not oar sentiment must guide us-forgetting all the time that the world has never yet tried the more excellent way of dove, as laid down by Jesus, Pauļ,
St. Francis, and Tolstoi.
