"ROSE."

A MODEL DETECTIVE FILM AT THE KING'S.

ALSO THE GRAND NATIONAL,

"A very good film," was the comment of a pleasant American. lady on leaving the King's Theatre yesterday evening after seeing "At the Villa Rose" The praise was well-deserved for there was nothing of the lack of grip that sometimes spoils British films of this kind. A rend advance in direction and all. round technique is noticeable, and our visitor made no unfavourable comparison with Hollywood pro- ductions, except. perhaps, the ab sence of the final "close up," a Baale by no means needed in this grim and arresting story. "At

the Villa Rose" is another triumph of the great French detective, Hanaud, the elder twin one might call him, of Agatha Christie's Her- cule Poirot. Austen Trevor ins played the role many times and has grown into it. He is sauve and lias a joke here and there: he is mystifying, and then he makes a spring, usually in a most unexpect ed direction. In this case he had

us all guessing, and yet his solu tion is no author's gift. The clues are there; they lead irrevocably in one direction: we know all that Hannud knows, hut he sees the truth, and we see how easy it was,

Fine Acting,

There is some fine acting. Richar du, Hannad's Watsoni, a dandy little Englishmty, without many brains, is admirably played, while Helen the sinister maid, is acted in Violet Farchrother. One would like the Sybil Thorndyke manner by

to see this actress in a big part. Norah Baring plays the unhappy with convincing Celia Herbend naturalness. It is a diffienit part: that of a well-meaning but weak, frightened and rather neurotic young woman. She is no tragedy queen. It is not a part that lends itself to heavy forcefulness, but one is given what is needed, an ordinary girl in an exceedingly tight corner. and up against hopeless odds.

The old lady who in eventually murdered is also perfectly played, and all too soon is the victim re- moved from the stage.

Pathe Gazette shows the Grand- National of 1932, i film that will thrill every race lover and no one, race fan or not, can fail to enjoy.

SUPER PRODUCTION NOW: SHOWING.

If you have seen "Ben Hur" it silent pictures, you should make it a point, if you have not done so already, to see it in the talkies:---If- the silent picture' thrilled ́you and if the stupendous scale on which the picture was produced stirred your imagination, the sound version, you will find, goes much further in theso: directions.

costumes

Ramon Novarro, R Ben-Hur, gives a surprisingly vigorous and dramatic portrayal. The gorgeous worn by the cast will linger in the memory for many a day-the beautifully gowned and jewelled women of bygone days comparing well with women of to. day with their latest from Paris."

It is, however, in scenic splendour that Ben-Hur excels. In the pre- sent film, you not only scc, but also hear, the thrilling chariot races of the Roman age. The exciting ac tion contained in the chariot race in the film touches so high a pitch that one follows it with breathless excitement

The sca fight is another gorgeous scene, and the sound picture cer. tainly scored heavily on the silent picture in this department of the film. The toiling galley slaves, the intensity of the romantis scenes, and the general display of art and artistic illusions throughout the film, appeals to the imagination far more in the talking film than in the silent version.

In every respect,. "Ben-Hur " 48 A sound film is a masterpiece. It should be seen to be really appre ciated.

The story is too well-known to be recounted here, but those who in- tend to sco this picture should note the times at the Queen's Theatre. Performances start at 2.30, 8.00, 7.15, and 0.30 p.m. The main film starts immediately after the musical overture,
