Whilst the Indo-China 8. N. Co 5. Chipeling was lying alongside the wharf at the Standard Oil Company's installation at Laighi kok yesterday morning, taking, on a catgo of gasoltho for Amoy, a terrific explosion, followed almost instantly by a fire, occurred and as a result a number of men of men are feared to have been killed in two of the holds while several were removed to the hospital suf- fering from serious injuries.

The explosion took place shortly before 8.45 u.a., at which time there wore already some 1,000 cases of gasolene in the holds. This was followed by a sheet of flames shoot ing up and a cloud of heavy black smoke rendered regne operations extremely dangerous. In a short space of time, the fire fighting pliances at the Installation in con junction with the Fire Brigade were brought to bear, but so furiously did the fire rage that it was not until about 10.30 am. that it was more or less under control.
