They do not know that in 1012. 13-14, the price of newsprint wEN 50 per cent, lower than the prosent price. Owing to doplation of forests in all parts of the world,

and consequent continual added distance of raw material from com- mercial centres, the costs tend further to increase.

Australia consumes about 130,000 tons of paper per year at £18 per ton, current price, this amounts to £2,340,000. In ten years the saune quantity will cost 3,510,000. The fact is that we shall be paying £1,170,000 more per year for paper, than we pay to-day, but increased consumption will probably add to per cent. to 130,000 tons, so that the actual tonnage will be 195,000 costing approximately £6,266,000,,

For many years the only sourÇO of supply of timber pulp has bech the natural forest of Canada, North America, Russia and Norway to gether with certain afforestation arcas in the latter country,

Quick Growth.

In recent years large areas of Eoftwood trees have been planted in New Zealand, and Australia. Expert observation has shown bow growth in those countries compares and it is claimed that in New Zealand, it is four times quicker than in Canada and Europe, and Australia, from one to three times quicker, according to locality. That Pinus Insignis in New Zealand is ready for pulping in from 10 to 14 years after planting, and that re- planting may take place in the following year.

From practical experiments made by the Australian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research it has been demonstrated, thal nowsprint may be produced at å total cost of £12 per ton.

A Big Scheme.

Obviously the question arises. what are we going to do about it) So far, very little. A few govern. mont schemes of afforestation in the States and Commouwenith, all very small. A somewhat larger scheme in tho Dominion of Now. Zealand, a few afforestation com panies m various localities and more ambitious scheme involving 200,000 acres of new forests by, the New Zealand Perpetual Foraste, Ltd.

This latter company has advan tages in that its forests have 30-40 available electric power from the miles of river frontage, besides

Government hydro-electric pow station, within a few miles of the

forests.
