Ascot, Juno 18 Royal Ascot made a brilliant opening yesterday, although the attendance was not quite so large as in some former and more prosperous OGTA.

The King and Queen, at the head of seven somi-State landaus containing members of the Royal Family, drove along the course to the Royal Box through veritable sea of fluttering handker chiefe. In every ethor respect Royal Ascot maintained its tradi- tional brilliance.

Thrilling racing made the success of the day complete. The Totalizator takings were £46,578, compared with £44,803 on the open. ing day last year.

For all the hugeness of the stands there is something toy like about this course. Everything about it is so spick-and-span, so essentially unused, like the fresh, vivid enamel on an elaborate birthday present which one was half-afraid to play with. The very indicators will not tell you the facts in terse, ironwork, but most needs roar skywards, in, gay aluminium spears with golden points.

Unlet Boxes.

Dark hints have been dropped during the past few weeks that Ascot, in this year of depression, would fali far short of its olden glory. Fifty boxes, it is said, have Feast of Heavenly Gifts (Tien remained unlet-unprecedented and L'uany-chich).
