In the little-known" Stout engineer-
motor.
Mr. Stout, now working in dependently, has characteristically taken the lowest-powered car-the Austin-for his ex-and a number of radical ideas on construction he is gathering murprising materials on the automobile.
One point Mr Stout brings op which does not occur to the normal observer is that an automobile may be perfectly streamlined for head resistance and yet can become at most unmanageable in a not un- usual crosswind.
Design Streamlined in All Directions.
"Drift takes care of the motor- boat and the airplane in a cross current," he says. "There is no drift with an automobile. Only a small part of the time it is heading directly into the wind. There would seem to be little advantage in streamline to reduce head re- sistance. If you are forced to build up, weight to hold the car on the road in a cross-wind, the design should be streamlined in all direc tions.
Mr. Stout forsees a further speedy spread of the streamline, and pre- dicts the rearmotored automobile by 1934.
Development of radical body lincs is, of course, an old súbject with automobile men," he says. "They confess the present-day ca inefficient, and xet logically, they argue that there can be no short outs in public acceptance. The process, they feel, must be gradual. People are buying appearance to day, not performance. And it is relatively simple to get too far -ahead of the parade.
There were encouraging signs in the 1032 care. The automobile industry had been in a rat. Now three are indications that the on- gineers are in the saddle instead of the antes departments. The sales man Has come to appreciate his en gineer. For that reason the pro gress of the automobile will be more apparent in the next few years.?"
Cars of the near future, Stout says, will be lighter. Motors now weigh 10 to: 78 pounds per horse- power. Five should be enough, he feela: Extreme gas taxes, horse- power taxes and waight taxes will have their effect. The increasing dangers of traffic must also be taken into consideration The lighter the car, the more comfortable.degó 10 In his disqussion Stout declared that the airplane has given more to the automobile than it has taken. He cited the multiple-cylinder en- gine, the new air wheel now obtain- ling favour, and at the moment the fstreamline.
