IT IS A MATTER FOR PROMPT INTERVENTION BY THE POWERS WHO CANNOT POSSIBLY ACQUIESCE

ΤΟ SUCH AN ARRANGEMENT, ACCORDING TO AUTHORITATIVE CHINESE AND BRITISH TRADERS.

THE MOVE IS INTERPRETED AS BEING FURTHER PROOF OF JAPANESE DOMINATION IN MANCHURIA

AND MIGHT BE FOLLOWED "BY A TARIFF SYSTEM DETRIMENTAL ΤΟ OTHER POWERS, FURTHERMORE, IT WOULD DISRUPT THE WHOLE CHINESE, CUSTOMS

JAPANESE BLUEJACKETS IN SHANGHAI

issued by the Hon. Director of Publis Warks:--

The average quantity of water in storage in the reservoirs of the Colony at the end of the Arst week in June during the last eight years was 1,456 million gallons whereas the present storage, is only 786 million gallons.

I

Normal consumption on full supply at this time of the year has steadily increased from 11- million gallons per day in 1924 to 1 million gallons.

In view of the rapid develop- ment of the Colony and the fact that no largo additional supply will be made available in the near future, coupled with the possibility of a second low ralt. fall year, it is not considered advisable to increase the hours of supply until about 1,000 million gallons are in storage.

The Waterworks Engineer has been able, by means of the re- duced hours of supply and the new fountain system, to turtail the Colony's supply to 6 million gallons per day (4 Hong Kong and 2 Kowloon). Since the rains set in, however, he has; by increasing the pressure in certain districts where large mains are suitably placed, aug- mented the supply to about 7 million gallons per day and is now increasing this again to about 7 millon gallons per dey.

Although the recent rams may have created the impression that the chortage is a thing of the past it must be pointed out that to date the total increase. in storage since Friday last only unckats to an additional 17 days' supply at the present very much curtailed rate of con- sumption.
