LETTER FROM

THE AMERICAN TRADE COMMISIONER

Through your courtesy, Mra, Barringer and I had the great pleasure of Being a pre-view of your picture Humanity Saturday, April 23rd,

on

We both greatly enjoyed the picture. As the writer spent two years in European Russia in charge of American relief opera- ́ tions during the great Russian famine of those years, I can rouch for the excellent "shots" that you have showing real famine conditions. I think that this is a eplendid picture, and, as you say, should appeal to both Europene and Chinese audiences. The close-ups were particularly good, and although in spota the photography. might have been improved upon, on the whole I consider is a very high grade production.

Thanking you for having remembered mo when you showed this picture.

I am,

Very truly yours,

THE HONGKONG AMUSEMENTS,

LIMITED.

I wish to thank you for your courtesy in giving me an opportunity to attend the private pre-view of your latest film "HUMANITY."

In congratulating you upon your success in its production, I wish to star that the picture discloses a most pathetic # story, very finely told, acted and photogra phed. The fumine problem is very vividly portrayed and the film should give the world a true glimpse of village life in the interior of China.

On the whole," my Associates and I consider this pictare as the greatest triumph yet achieved by your Company, and it 16 worthy of the attention of pot only the Chinese people but all foreigners who would undoubtedly find interest from an insight of the life and existence of villagers in China

With best wishes to you and your Company for every success in the exploita tion of the above film.

Your very truly.

General massacro. That is the warfare of the Kurds. But they have shrewd respect for the Bri. tish. The Assyrian lavies of Irak are the only troops that can really master these mountaineers. They tell of the adventures of the meat famous bandit of all, Agha Telle. This freebooter has raided more Turks caravans and killed more than any man on Mount Araral, There are sougs yelled in this duop valleys of Kurdistan relating the prowess of Tello.

Thoy say that Tolle's favourite wife was a Levantine girl, newly married, and captured in a caravais raid wish her husband. The bridal pair were on their way to the Mosul oilfields. With consummate cruelty Tello murdered the husband, while the beautiful Lavantine wife was forced to look uri.

And then 1" 1 naked. "Then she married Tello and has given him four cons," murmured my bandit' friend. By Allah, u'wile worth the wining."

When the war was ranging against the Turks, the women followed their husbands into the fight. They also yelled the name of Tello, and took up rides dropped by the wounded. Soon they were in the midst of the great sport of killing Turks.

In the mountains of Kurdistan 1 discovered that mothers not only carried their babies on their backs, but also rifles. No one on the slope of Mount Araras is without a rifle. Gun-running over the Persian bor der is a profitable occupation. 15 is wise to go to bed fully dressed. One rifle shot in the night and the whole village starts firing enthusi astically. One becomes mixed in a through general pandemonium, which charge herds of goats, sheep and fanatical women.

AMONG THE CREVICES.

Secking the villages where thes bandits live needs a destept into the crevices of the mountains. The sky is barely visible. The mud houses in which they live are cram- med with the loot of caravans and raida into peighbouring territory I saw in one house a cheap alarm clock and an old motorcar tyre. Both were considered beautiful ob jects. They, had been taken from a caravan. that had dared too "nea the mountains.

Individuals they ignore. Armies fill them with a desire for blood and loot. The bandit chief sende out a shrill whistle that echoes in these deep crevices, and within. few minutes the army of goatskins are clambering upwards, rifes and knives ready. They descend, a swarm of grey devils, upon a group of enemy acoats or some passing caravan. In hand-to-hand fighting the Kurds are desperate man.

There A strange, lost people, are Devil Dancers among them," Sitan Worshippers, and many functical Moslema. Some, worship the fish, which is not unusual an this mountain where the Ark reated during the Great Flood. And when the mountain people are not being massacred by enemies they are killed in their thousantis by the earth- quaken that crumple up villages in these regions like concertinas. Then the nomads trek to another place.

WATCH ON THE ROADS.

Today the Kurds are watching with suspicion the roads built by the British and the Perdana, which slowly crawl towards, their moun- tain fastnesses. They liesisate about raiding the workers' camps. After all, these roads will see many rich Caravans passing between the Cas pian Sea and the Mediterranean. It means more loot for the bandits: The abril whistle will go echoing Among the mountains and the sons of Noah will rush forward în înë of their blind charges. Once again, As throughout history, the grey roads of Asia Minor will be stained red.

But it is worth it," murmured the bandit in the bedroom of Tabriz He gazed rount at the stooping fifteen. "Brave men bathe in blood. Only the bloodless uso plain “water:?! mythagi
