"SHANGHAI, Mag 27. Radio mesanges received ón Shanghai, this morning roport a shipping disaster in the Yangtze Gorges Wednesday. The steamer I Ling was steaming down the river when she struck a rocky 235 miles above Icheng and sank rapidly.
The Captain has been rescued, but it is stated that forty people are missing. It is believed, how ever, that a number of these were swept down the river by the sur- rent and probably landed lower down the Yanglaze.
The rock is a well-known obstruc tion at this point and the steamer 1 Ling waa being piloted by one of the oldest pilots on the Gorges. The cause of the disaster is so far unknown.
