LIST OF TEMPORARY STREET FOUNTAINS
The following announcement has hoen received from the Huu.
(TO THE EDITOR OF THE 1980 RON Director of Public Worka--
ד"
DAILY PRESS. "1:
Sin-Those who listomed in last evening and others who read their morning newspapers to-day must have been delighted with Hong Kong's Grand Old Man's in teresting recital of the improve- ments in Hong Kong and at Kaw loon, the cumulative effect of which
·BUIS up the Colony's amasing growth and development during the past years.
It is true that the Hon. Bir Henry Pollock, K., in his list
of the reclamations carried out during the period under review,.} contented himself with mentioning only the most important ones! during his time..
Ever jealous of Kowloon's im portance and the ever-increasing part. it has taken and will continue. to take in the growth of the Colony, Sir Henry will probably pardon me if I suggest an addition or two to his list of reclamation works. On the Kowloon side, far the most important is the reclaire- ing from the sea of Tsimshatsui Bay. This reclamation gave the Colony, the immense area enabling. the locating of the Railway Sta tion at Kowloon Point, the con- struction of the imposing block of warehouse known as Holt's Godowns, and the palatial Penin- uin Hotel, leaving Buffoient ground space for a now. Post Office which when built, should add to the architectural em bellishment of Kowloon's water- front. It was due to the large vision and unbounded confid. unco in the future of the Colony. that led my old and respected friend, Mr. Robert Gordon Shewan, to make the first move that led to Tsimshatsui Bey being put up to public auction for sale.
The Yaumati reclamation set back for a couple hundred feet, if not more, the police station on Temple Street and the water pump ing station. The Hunghom Bay reclamation permitted. of the con struction of Chatham Road, named after a former Director of Public Works, and the laying down of che railroad. Socony's Frivate
cnterprise at Laichikok added the extensive area of land for the oil installation, and contingent worka: The Cheungsbhwan reclamation is still in progress and another in contemplation at Tsun Wan will build up a new township in the New Territories in the near futuro, The Shain Tseng Bay reclamation on Castle Penk: Road has made room for new industries in the Now Territories.
On Hong Kong side there, are the following réclamations of much Importance(1) Causeway Bay affording much room for recreation like, polo, cricket, football, tenis, etc. (2). North Point for the erec tion of the AP.C.. large oil in- stallation and (3) further esat ward the Sugar King's reclamation which promises to become an im
·portant, industrial district.
Will Bir Henry, please pardon mo: if I suggest that inclusion-in his very intercaling review of the Homuntin building scheme which owed its initiation to Mr. E. PI de V. Bosten, and the Kowlogo Tong Carden City Schome, which has added to the Colony's housing facilities in the suburban army about 200 houses with prettily bath: "cara lawns and gardens, that arg
such a delight to the residente
I recognise the limitatione as to time when speaking into the micro- phone. Perhaps another occnsion will be found when Sir Henry Pollock will oblige his friends and other admiring residents of Hong Kong with a longer darrative of the progress the Colony has made since be first land here on April 2, 1898. — Yours, etc.,
