ANGLO-IRISH SINO-JAPANESE CLASH PREDICTED CHINESE

FRIENDSHIP

MR. THOMAS' PLEA AT HOVE

(Renter's Spacial Service,).

LONDON, May 0

A plon for Anglo-Irish friendship was made by Mr. J. H. Thomas in a speech at Hove today in which the Dominions Secretary dwelt on the improvement of Anglo-Irish ro- lations since 101.

Ho declared that it would not be the fault of the British Govern mont if all this advance were want- ad. He stood by every word of his recent statements concerning the attitude of the British Government in relation to the Free State, but emphasised that in making them ho was hot basing the British position on any constitutional theory or question of status, but simply on the sanctity of trentice and tho maintenance of agreements.

They had no choice but to adopt the attitude that they could not negotiate for fresh agreements with the Free Stabo if the existing ones were not observed,

The Government and people, of Britain wished to see the people of the Free State happy and prosper. ous. They believed that the pros. perity of the Free State wus bound .up with the prosperity of Britain and it was in the best interests of both countries to remain linked to. gether within the British Common- wealth,

Period of Bitterness. [DRITISH WIRELNAS: SERVICE )

Ruany, May 81.

An important statement on rola- tions with the Irish, Fres State was made in a speech by the Dominion's Secretary, Mr. J. H. Thomas, at Hove last night.

Ho emphasised his desire to avoid speaking in a controversial spirit, but said that he felt it was due to the people of Irelandh and at home that the position should be made absolutely clear.

He said Here is a country where, after a long period of hitter- nos, we hud all hoped und. be- lieved that by the treaty of 1921 a new or was opened. Who will deny, looking back over the last ten years, that we have witnessed marked improvement in political relations between the two coun trics and a growing friendship und understanding

"On the basis of the treaty" the Free State, has become an equal member of the British Common- wealth and the Irish Free State re- präsentatives have been in the fore- front in contributing towards the constitutional developments of these yeurs, which have resulted in the establishment of the British Com- monwealth as we know it to-day as group of nations on a footing of complete equality.

Not Britain's Fault.

17

Is all the advance made during dmat last ten years now to be what- ed-all this work to be thrown away? If so it will not be through any Iault on our side or through any wish of ours.

I have had more than once ro cently to make statements on behalf of the Government indicating our attitude in relation to the "Irish Freb State. By every word of those. statements. I. sand, but I want to make it absolutely clear that in making them I was not basing our position An дру constitutional ibrary or question of status," but simply on the sanctity of treaties and the maintenance of agreements,

How could we negotiute fresh agreements with the Irish Froo State if the existing ones were not- observed? How could wo suppose that greater inctity would be at Lached to an agreement made in Ottawa than to one which had been made in London What other at titude can we adopt 7 We liave no- choice. But are the relations be tween the two countries to be on such a footing 1 I cannot believe it.

Happy and Prosperous,

"The Government and people of this country wish well towards the Irish Free State. We wish to sea. its people happy and prosperous We believe that the prosperity of the Fren State is bound up with the prosperity of this country and that it is in the best interests of both countries that they should remain linked together within the

MISGIVINGS IN LONDON

LONDON, May 22,

The Japanese political situation, particularly the wider impli cations, is causing misgivings in London. The comings and goingą since M. Innkað's murder are held to denote that the results of crime will in no way diminish the power of the Military juzta, consequently there is an increase in the risk of a Russo-Japanese clash, but rule out the likelihood of reasonable ". treatment of the Sino-Japanese problem, to say nothing of serious internal Japanese irruption.

The Observer remarks that Inukai's assassination is a grave. misfortuns to the world generally as well as to Japan.

The Sunday Times, discussing "Japan's dangerous cynical policy at Shanghai and in Manchuria,” besides the danger of hos tilities with Russia, says that something of terrible significance to 'the world's futurs is happening in Buggia to-day. The world will be wise to understand and not underestimate it.

According to the Sunday Pictorial, military circles in London and leading Powers believe that nothing will prevent the eventual collision of Chinese and Japanese troops.
